Not to mention I'm pretty sure we're the ONLY region that does numbered naming. What is this FF1? We've long since moved passed this.I can agree with this. I mean it does make it sound like the powers are growing instead of just being replaced. Maybe just me though, but never been a fan of the whole "Fire 2/3/4" I'd like to assume we are all big boys and girls and can check the tool tip and not get confused. xD
The localization for VII used numbers, but the Japanese also used the ra-ga thing.
While it never really bothered me, it definitely was a small topic to think about lol. At first, I thought it was because they were going to follow XI naming conventions to imply the type of spell. E.G. Fire (any number tier) represents single target and -ga/-ra/-ja represents AoE. Given how that clearly wasn't the case, it just seemed a little odd to not go traditional. I suppose it came down to how they might have contemplated the idea that they could introduce new tiers that go beyond the trio of -ga/-ra/-ja and that they could reserve those for very specific situations. Like a boss/NPC with Thundaga, an NPC-only spell.
Heh... Funny you should say that. You do realize the whole plot of FF7 was that Sephiroth was summoning Meteor, which could only be stopped by the spell Holy, right?

It just feels more FF to go with the cura curaga than these numbers which make every new number feel like a lazy new spell.
If it was without the numbers they would actually feel like unique spells, to me anyway.
So basically the english version is the only one that doesn't want things feel to FF enough.
It didn't make FFX sell less so it's ok to change it back to cura, curaga, etc
