A Heartfelt Post To This Community That I Am A Part Of.

Respect for being able to speak on such a personal topic. I hope this post stays as well, because it is very relevant to the community of an MMO. How many of us login for an escape? Or how many are complete social hermits out of game? I know a few dozen people that play because they are physically/mentally disabled and can't actually leave their house regularly. This game is their life, in a lot of ways (I know lots of people like to say, "well, that's unhealthy. They should get out." But if the alternative is being isolated entirely, is that really any better?). I know others not in as extreme of circumstances, but they do not have happy lives outside of game, which is why they play games in the first place.

I can't say I've ever been that low (even during the worst of my depression in high school), but I've had my moments when irl just gets to me too much, and I just immerse myself and hang out with all the awesome people I know. Times like those, the trolls, the miserable/aggressive people really get to you. For them, they're just blowing off steam from a similarly crappy day/week/month at someone that is nothing to them but a bunch of pixels (and logically, we all know it's not meant personally), but it feels like a very personal attack. Like, how do you think it goes when it's directed at someone already prone to suicidal tendencies?

Dunno, I just do what I do. I listen, I stay positive, and help out whoever I can, because for a lot of people this isn't just a game. It's an escape, it's where all their friends are, it's where they can just get lost in a different place for a few hours...

Sorry, I dunno if any of this is relevant, I'm not really good with words when it comes to serious stuff, but I felt like your post deserved a response.

I'm suicidally depressed and have been for perhaps 60 out of my now 66 years. I've attempted suicide just once and ended up in a mental wartd with nurse ratchet as my care taker.. That was a very long time ago.. Mind you, I'm still disabled,depressed, in a chair and worthless to everyone except my cat. But this gift of each new day, bringing new if small things my way, is incredible, and i use that to keep going. Besides, I have Emphysema and my own body is trying to kill me. I've got to stay alive if only to spite this damned disease..

My words in my opening post may be naive words that hope to save someone else from themselves. Maybe I am naive for truly believing that the words of a stranger online would be enough to stop someone from taking their own life. Maybe my words are arrogant. Maybe I say them to try and absolve myself of my own misplaced guilt. But, regardless, I cannot not say them. Because, even if they are naive, maybe they are all that at least one person needs to stop themselves.

They aren't. As someone who also endured the darker side of depression. Even the smallest sentiment can mean far more than one might intent. Sometimes, the words from a stranger have an even greater weight because they otherwise have no vested interest in your life yet... reach out for no other reason. That... is a powerful sentiment.

I would say more, but Junsei and you both have covered all that needs be said. I'll offer my sincere condolences.

I personally don't see any reason as to why they would take it down. But I too lost someone to it and the image of finding them still haunts me. That person is gone and all what I am left with is haunting thoughts asking if I could have done something better to prevent such a thing. If you commit suicide, the pain may end for you. But at the same time, you're taking that pain and you're distributing it to everyone that you know. And the closer you are to the person, the more it's amplified. Anyways..everything that was needed to say has been said and as others also said, I offer sincere condolences. I will also add, please try to keep your head up. I feel your pain and I understand it. No one else can fill that void, but you have support here as well.

This is such a gray zone however. Is suicide really selfish in the end, and if it really takes courage or not. Life is not pain-free for anyone, and some need help to stay strong more than others.

That is true..if only we could. I still ask myself if only I could ave picked it up sooner. Maybe that friend would still be here.

I had a chain suicide event in my family. My cousins ex committed suicide, my cousin committed suicide out of guilt, which then set his already at risk brother over the edge and he tried to commit suicide as well, So I completely agree with the "People are not better off without you" point. It hurts everyone involved in ways you might not expect.
