Honestly, the real reason (from a business perspective) was likely to drive some traffic to their Official Instagram to try to get some followers. For a game that has "millions" of subscribers, the engagement rate on their social media is incredibly low (only 36.5k followers on Instagram, about a 9% engagement rate based on avg. likes v. followers.) I believe they have gained approx. 2k followers since they started this "reveal" and Instagram is basically free and cheap for any company and can be incredibly impactful when used correctly as a marketing vehicle.
On a side note: It's a little sad that it was "just" an artwork reveal, rather than some sort of fun/new reveal for Stormblood. I, for one, am a little disappointed (but not shocked).

FFXIV has never had over a million subs at any given point. I think the high estimate was 700k at HW launch. It has had 5 million account made which includes 1.0. Its just like WoW has had 100 million account made in it's lifetime. The devs said in the beginning that they would be happy to just have 200k subscribers. FFXIV is larger than what FF11's playerbase was for sure. The percentage is a lot higher for those who are engaged in following their social media.Honestly, the real reason (from a business perspective) was likely to drive some traffic to their Official Instagram to try to get some followers. rip all the bunny tail theories
Noted; the verbiage I should have used was: "millions of accounts" (vs. subscribers)FFXIV has never had over a million subs at any given point. I think the high estimate was 700k at HW launch. The engagement rate I quoted is actually not wrong however. I was not determining it based upon an assumed amount of FFXIV subscribers vs. Instagram followers. The best way to look at it (if someone really wants to take the time) would be to figure out their average # of "likes" and average # of comments per post and divide that out by the amount of followers they have on said platform. That's how most companies who advertise or pay for advertising on social media platforms gauge the "quality" of traffic/followers for any given account to determine whether or not it's a worthy resource.
Regardless, I go back to my main point: I believe the purpose of the "reveal" on Instagram was to try to drive traffic to their official account and gain followers.
My mother told me I had a chameleon soul, no moral compass pointing due north, no fixed personality; just an inner indecisiveness that was as wide and as wavering as the ocean...
Never have I been so sad to be so wrong!![]()
