I am going to make SCH my first healer I level when I get done with my WAR, and I have a question on this point (and I know nada about playing a SCH) - what about the Selene pet and Fey Caress? SCH happens at 30, and Selene replaces Summon II, and Fey caress is a level 20 spell. Am I misunderstanding how that all works?

Just curious, because Brayflox specifically would seem to put SCH's in a bind.

Fey Caress will work .. on a 60 second cooldown. Fey Caress was modified for 3.0 though - it used to be a skill speed buff.

Thanks for clearing that up. So Brayflox specifically seems to be a pain point for SCH healers specifically. That kinda sucks, but better to know now before I get down on myself for not knowing how to play.

This is probably a horror story for the other healer I just got in a WCM I ran with a friend, but you're gonna have a big laugh if you read this story, I promise.

So, I went in on DiAST, and had a prepared expanded Balance and all. The other healer was a NoctAST, and I noticed she also had a expanded Balance prepared. I'm sure you see where this is going. In these cases, I usually let them use theirs first because it's just easier to hold on to it and time it myself rather than relying on DF people's capacity to coordinate, but as we got closer to the first boss, I pulled another Balance.

So I promptly told her in Party chat: "Let me expand my Balance first, cause I just pulled another one, please." She was silent, and then they pulled. So as they go, I use the Balance I had just drawn, extend it with CO, and then... this lady uses hers to overwrite mine, which had already been extended. Wasted CDs and RR. I was pissed off at first, ngl, though I wouldn't have been if I hadn't specifically asked her not to. Anyways, that was a declaration of war for me. For the rest of that boss I just kept my friend buffed with single target Arrows and Balances to avoid overwriting, but for Forgall....

I noticed she already had an Expanded Balance as we were going to the boss, so I waited for her to use her Balance, extend it with CO, and then I just used an Expanded Spear in order to be the most annoying little shit. FIRE WITH FIRE, LADY. Or ice, or whatever the hell Spear stands for, no one cares. Anyways, I kept being annoying with the cards, and then she died to Megadeath, I think? Along with other three party members, so I ended up raising the others and barely solo-healing through Hell Wind because I was out of MP from Raising half the party throughout the whole thing. Still left her biting the dust, though.

As we reached Ozma, I told my friend through a LS chat that I was gonna overwrite her Balance with a Spear again, but he was like "Hazel pls," obviously NOT THRILLED about getting a fucking Spear. So I heard him out, even though I had a Spear in my Spread.

THANKFULLY, HOWEVER, I managed to Draw a Balance right before the pull, so I waited for her to use her expanded Balance again, then saw her pop CO, overwrote her Balance with MINE, and then threw the Spear I had spread on her and her alone. It took her a couple seconds, but I saw her click the Spear off, probably pissed off as hell. I was cackling, of course. A little bit after, she threw a Spear on me after she expanded a Balance, so I took the chance and used Luminiferous Aether, gave an Arrow to my friend (BLM) once her Balance was over, and Time Dilated it to make some use of the Spear. Then I /doted her, but Ozma swallowed us and I don't think she saw.

Eventually we were on the border of wiping to Ozma, as you usually are because lol DF, and only my friend, the tank and me were standing with very little HP, so I figured I'd put my differences aside for a moment for an emergency truce. I'm not sure how she took that, but I had my revenge and I was at peace.

In Caliofisteri, she and like other 4 dudes in the party managed to get hit by haircut all at the same time. I tried saving everyone with a Lightsped Helios, but I could only reach a couple DPS because everyone loves to be super far away in 24-mans, and half the party ended up dying, including her. I noticed the boss was at like 7%, so instead of rezing I just switched to CS and kept DPSing until the raid was over.

At the Exit of the instance, I /doted her once again, and then I got a single commendation. I don't know if it was hers, but I gave her mine for giving me one of the must fun WCM runs of my life, even if it was at her possible expense. NGL, I feel kinda guilty, BUT that's what you get when you ignore your co-healer when they're trying to communicate!

I've ran Brayflox many, many times on my SCH, and the poison isn't as bad as it is made out to be. Or I should say, it isn't so bad that it overwhelms Eos. I've actually had more trouble healing that dungeon on my WHM. You can use Selene for the AoE cleanse, but the poison is often inflicted while it is on cooldown, and Eos' whispering dawn adds additional healing, and will completely negate non-stacked poison. If poison stacks gets too high during the last boss, it can get a little more healing intensive, but if you place Eos and use whispering dawn, it is more than manageable. If using Selene, have her cast Fey Caress when poison stacks gets to three.

The poor, poor SMN in my group last night

An FC mate and I was running leveling roulette trying to get our jobs to 60 and we got Sohm Al. The SMN was a sprout, and her first time in the instance. She was undergeared, and couldn't take a hit. Add to that she struggled avoiding AoE. The tank also wasn't the best at mitigating his own damage, so I couldn't keep the SMN on her feet, and my MP pool was seriously being taxed throughout the dungeon. She was really trying, you can tell as she was just running out of the AoEs just a little too late.

I'm not the best healer by any means, but I can tell how a AoE heavy boss fight is going to go based on how the group performs during the dungeon, and I knew the SMN was going to have a hard time with Sohm Al's final boss. Sure enough it was the case, and I had to leave her down. It is so rare that this happens to me, and it makes me feel horrible when I have to make the decision to no longer raise a player.

She apologized, and said she felt bad as she felt like she got carried to the clear. I apologized as well for having to leave her down, and she understood. We gave her our comms anyway. My FC mate is a SMN main and told her she's totally been there. I just wish I could have done more to help. I should have done more.

Nothing new for me - been working on ACN to get EfE on my WHM, level 27 and rising... But getting there involved the same-old-same-old - healers healing in cleric, panicking, removing it and becoming perma-overhealers, or casting DPS spells out of cleric (if any at all), and those who don't even have cleric who enjoy just healing max-healthbars and nothing else. Only one of the three was responsive when I tried to offer a few (polite) tips, one was DE (either didn't speak English, or didn't want to), and the last ignored everything. That's all well and good, except we had a (first) a Marauder with no Flash and seemingly no idea what Overpower was, followed by (second) squishy first-time tank with a 'let me pull everything for you' caster DPS, sometimes intentionally, other times because they wanted to explore every nook and cranny that was in the complete opposite direction to the team in places like Thousand-Maws, pulling 20billion lightning mobs back for good measure - lucky I was ACN'ing so I could off-heal and prevent a wipe after one particular incident thanks to that pleb, while said healer was fumbling around with cleric stance (healing in it, mostly).

Funny to think that I would never have noticed (or had reason to complain) if I wasn't a healer main. Back in the day, I just assumed certain groups were slow due to gear - now that I tank & heal primarily, all I see in the lower bracket is sloppiness. Totally fine with that for learners, but a lot of above cases that happened are all people who've unlocked their jobs.

Anyway, as said, nothing we all haven't experienced before. Been sticking to lowbie content lately seeing as I capped everything very shortly after reset this week. Entirely expected, but no less tiresome when you really don't want to have to revisit the <50 dungeons and spend 40+mins per visit.

You did fine, Gemina. Triage is part of the healer's job and sometimes you just shouldn't save or raise them.

The best you can do is encourage the sprout is to keep trying. Too many players treat dying as failure. It's not, really. Dying is part of the learning process. It's telling the player they need to improve in order to overcome a specific challenge. That summoner will get the timing down eventually.

The first time I did Brayflox on SCH was also the first time I ever healed on SCH. At the time I just outhealed poison with Adloquium blocking any new damage; when positioned next to the tank, Eos healed the tank well enough for me to care about every other member one by one.

Nowadays I intentionally do a Swiftcast > Selene swap at about 50% HP to ensure Caress is off cooldown when the poison gets bad. SCH have bottomless MP pools anyway.

Yeah, it's a bit of fallacy to say Scholar suffers before they get Leeches, because of Fey Caress and Adlo would shield through poisons. Some players don't grasp that concept or understand fairy skills early-on. Adlo is your first skill as Scholar and yet you see the poor player still using Physick non-stop on poisons.

I would say "bottomless MP" is a bit of a caveat, and good Scholars will ensure that MP isn't an issue normally.

You can actually run dry before your Aetherflow comes up if you DPS a lot and don't have the PIE to support such in fights with little to no downtime, or if you are careless with Aetherflow stacks. Maybe someone burns Lustrates too much, when forced Embraces or GCD heal could have done the job probably better, now they are at-risk for not having MP needed for an upcoming mechanic.
