I believe Hopelessness was changed to Tension with the introduction of the Urth's Font trial. The Elementals of the black Shroud are no longer feeling "Hopeless" when Odin appears as the Warrior of Light now knows more of the truth of the being called Odin so now feel Tension as they await the next confrontation between the two.

You mean roughly when the Odin Trial was added to the game files for the 2014 Fanfests?

I think it was more of a localisation change then a lore change seeing as they updated other weather names at that time like clear/fair skies and leviathan's torrential to rough seas. But it sure is a good theory.
