Like I said I fully understand why this system is in place but there are many reasons why players may not be able to play for a month. I could be hospital dying. I have invested hundreds of hours and money into this game and if I want to be away for one short month I should be able to without being punished. The timer should be longer than one month.

No offense, but I could apply that excuse to any scenario. Should my static hold off progression because I'm "in the hospital dying?" Does it suck real life abruptly halts our video game fun? Absolutely. We just have to deal with it.

If you're in the hospital dying, I would sincerely hope the least of your worries would be a virtual house.

If you can't pay the sub to keep your house (which, if you were only away for a month, that's still less than the 45 day demolition timer), others gladly will. If it got to the point where you financially couldn't pay a sub for an online game, I would hope you'd have bigger concerns (i.e., having no money) than a virtual house. Yes, it sucks that housing is limited. But it would also suck if people could just unsub repeatedly for extended periods of time (I'm talking months at a time, not just the occasional week or month here and there), and still be able to keep their housing plots, even though they aren't using them.

I remember in the ward my previous FC house was located, there was a plot owned by someone who bought it the day new wards were released. They never logged in after that. Never even built anything on the land. So it sat there for MONTHS, unused, and others who wanted a house couldn't take the UNUSED plot because the timer had been suspended. Extremely frustrating.

Sure enough, on the 45th after the timer was back, a new individual finally got that plot, and actually used it.

To be really morbid, if you actually died, should the house then remain there forever?

(Yes, a less resource heavy system where everyone could have a house would be ideal.. But that is not currently the case.

A friend of mine died in December 2016. He was there from the beginning. He had everything from Raids in his Haus.
At the end he built a Moggle-House. Everything was gathered and crafted by himself. The House was full of of amazing stuff.
You can imagine that it has cost him a huge amount of time and gil.
Now that he is dead this House would stay empty forever. A Museum, nothing more.
I think it was a good decision, made by SE, to demolish houses and and make it possible to others to purchase a House.
Even if it's hard to see that my friend's House now has vanished.

If you're in the hospital dying, I think you'd have more pressing things to worry about than losing your virtual house on FFXIV.

If you were in the hospital dying, do you really think the state of your MMO account in 45 days would be important? But I know you were just reaching for concerns. I've gone away from the game for a while before - it is why I went with an apartment for my character instead of a house.

It is probably to late to pressure them for Stormblood... but we should maybe try to pressure the devs into making an instanced housing plot - seen from the outside this plot would look generic and have no outside decorations. Entering the plot through a 'portal' would put you on an instance for it - they could then have an unlimited number of these... Maybe add them off to the side of normal plots, similar to apartments.

While dying? Probably not. When recovered and wanting nothing more than to get back to normalcy as soon as possible? Yeah, I could see how that would be a kick in the gut for this hypothetical situation.

Honestly, it shouldn't be too late. They should have begun reworking housing at LEAST from the end of ARR. It has been OBVIOUSLY flawed since well before then. This is ridiculous.
