This is actually not true. I absolutely agree that you should play what you want and the amount of DPS done should not factor in at all, but Blm has quite a bit higher damage threshold than Smn. We shouldn't spread misinformation for the sake of telling people to play what they want!

Its not misinformation my friend... they do the same damage... in fact the SMN is actually higher on AoE damage than the BLM, the BLM is higher in single target. This is actually not true. That said...
I do not notice much difference in how fast any given target drops when playing one vs the other... they do similar amounts of damage at the same levels and in the same gear... because I play them both in the same gear I used up through the levels.
Here's your difference... you can't SEE it as a SMN... because your DoTs don't show in the Battlechat. Nor do they pop huge number over the mob as they're going off... for the record at ilvl 220 mine are ticking for 1100-1500 per tick when stacked. And that's before we get into the other damage I'm doing from the other things, like Ruin III and Painflare, Deathflare and Fester. Or even include Pet damage.
They both take time for their real damage to kick in... you have to build up to it with BLM the same way you do as a SMN.

I main SCH and my main caster dps choice was BLM for a very stupid reason: since I play on gamepad both my SCH/SMN hotbars are very similar and since I play SCH for most of the time whenever I switch to SMN I end up pressing wrong buttons thinking I'm still on SCH LOL.
On a more serious note though, like some people already said SMN requires a lot of pet managing and button pressing which I already do a lot as SCH, so I like playing BLM to change the pace a bit. I also feel I have more control over how much damage I'm doing as BLM than as SMN because I don't have to worry about pet's dps.
And the feeling of landing a crit Fire IV that kills the boss is awesome.

I started as a BLM had it up until nexus, but I started to lean over to SMN after dungeons became more mechanic heavy. Not only that the turret style of gameplay started to get super dull. I was enjoying the mobility of the SMN but still thought it needed more. Then we got insta tri-dotting and DWT as I stomped every class 1v1 in pvp I was like SMN YEAH!! Now with the Bahamut summon it looks like my patience with the class is paying off again. I traded in my BLM's nexus to get the materials for the SMN Anima because I already knew I was sticking with SMN and wasn't planning on maining another dps unless a new one came along, but after the Bahamut reveal I was 100% sure I wasn't going back to BLM. Plus I just find the lore on summoning much more interesting than black magic.
