not sure why you would go with a non gathering retainer, but unless its for a lawn ornament no real need.
odd to not level gatherer retainers to get dyes/minions and materials to make a good chunk of change without needing to be logged in.

A good reason to have a combat class retainer is because they are the only ones who can get monster parts like leather, wool, blood, etc. I started with a combat retainer and botanist. Later on I decided to splurge for a 3rd retainer to make a miner. The combat retainer is more valuable by far because it can guarantee get those mob drops rather than my having to commit genocide to an entire zone only for the rng to screw me over with maybe 1 or 2 drops. I recommend anyone with 2 retainers to make one of them a combat class for precisely this reason.
How many men am I involved with? Well that depends... do you mean men as in males? Or just midlanders?
