Why would a BLM meld mind in gear? Does this game do a poor job in explaining stats?

One reason (and its a poor one) could be that they have cross classed Cure or Physick for self healing while solo and want it to hit like a slightly damp noodle instead of a completely wet one. The issue with this is the significant loss in dps stats to have below average healing ability. It's somethingI played with while lvling BLM but ultimately it slowed kill speed too much.

I think it should fairly obvious that INT is a black mage's main stat when thaumaturge's traits boost nothing but INT.

But I've come to learn that you shouldn't expect common sense since a lot of people lack it.

Mousing over things to learn more via tooltips is a video game staple. Tooltips aren't exactly a pioneer game mechanic.

Fair point, but you can't always expect gaming literacy from everyone. That's just taking for granted the knowledge you've accumulated over your (presumably) years of experience.

Now, I'm not saying this game (or every game) should go to lengths to educate all players on subjects that are, largely, accepted as innate to most of the audience. Any game is free to set the base knowledge it expects. But that doesn't mean there won't be gaming illiterate players trying anyway.

I think we should all consinder ourselves lucky that materia in this game doesn't come with negatives like other "gemstones" in game. Can you imagine if MND materia did this:

+6 to healing spells
-10 to dmg spells

Yeah...that's the reality of some other games and I'm just glad it doesn't do it here.

If people can't be bothered to read tooltips, that's really their own problem.

Maybe they thought it would affect all healing they received, rather than put out? Still pretty silly, but maybe a possible explanation.

I have to plead guilty on this one. You can easily go through the whole story up to this point without slotting a single materia. I just beat Soul of the Creator Normal for the first time tonight, and still don't have any materia. I have no idea what sort of gear check Extreme eikons or Alex Savage requires, but up to the point I'm currently at, materia is basically a joke and not factored into the game.
