Just so you know, I keep politics out of my Online games as I want nothing to do with them. I escape reality to that point where that junk doesn't matter. No offense.

any chance of adding a non-voting. As the politic one only has the set, im not political and don't count myself as any.

    9. In politics people sometimes talk of left and right. Where would you place yourself on the following scale ranging from left to right?
    Left Centre-left Centre Centre-right Right

    and this

    10. In politics people sometimes talk of liberal and conservative. Where would you place yourself on the following scale ranging from liberal to conservative?
Liberal Liberal leaning Middle Conservative leaning Conservative

there us no none or other. option and would do the survey a disservice by not including non-political people.

sadly i can't complete the survey because of the 2 questions.

I completed the survey, but I get the feeling it was more aimed at end game players, whereas as I am level 30. I also don't have a main class.

I'm not a political person, but I do know where my ideas tend to be at. It is exactly those two questions that I'm most interested in the results to see where most players are. I have an idea where they would be, but I would like to see the results anyway.

Just say middle as that holds the equivalent of neutral or indifferent (none). Even if you are Libertarian, green, or whatever party your country might have they are going to fall somewhere on the liberal/conservative spectrum.
If you dont identify with any ideology, or dont give a damn, just say middle - you won't be lying as you don't have views one way or the other. It really isn't that hard.

For others claiming that you keep politics out of the game or you use it to escape reality - even if you use an in-game persona your personality and beliefs seep into your actions, who you play/converse with more often, etc. even if you arent fully aware of it. Incredibly minor things mind you but nonetheless is does occur. Hence the questions about your real life beliefs.

That makes sense then. However, it's a general concern of mine with any sort of research based surveys where very often here is a lack of nuance in the questions. Obviously you can't provide appropriate nuance or granularity to cover every person because the survey needs discrete categories to work with and I know that's partly to force people to pick answers as well as make those answers categorizable in a way letting them waffle about in a noncommittal fashion wouldn't, but I always wonder if it might not impact the final conclusions of the research. Using my example, for instance, forced to choose only one answer, which do I pick? Do I pick WoW, the game that has decidedly been my primary MMORPG for about a decade or do I pick the other games I play less that may more broadly represent my preferences? I don't think there's really a correct answer here, but it's noise I'm always left wondering about when it comes to research based on surveys and self-reporting.

Indeed, this is one of the issues I realized myself. I, too, focus differently in different games (and MMORPGs) and thus answering some of these surveys is hard and I find myself thinking the same way you do. And no, there is no one correct answer, but maybe in a future technology, theories and studies develop ways to remove this issue amongst others.

There are indeed issues with self-reporting surveys, but I think there are aspects of game play and players that at this time are infeasible to study in other ways. Even with access to server data (as is the case in some surveys and publications) not everything can be gathered without asking players themselves.

However, it means that there is still a lot of work to do in this area of study and the only way is forward.
