Yea this is called biased game review. Hes got a boner for the old republic and came off so "matter of fact" about what he is saying like its the truth. He used league of legends as an example of free MMO.. If you want to call LoL an MMO.. then so is Call of Duty. LoL is a team based RTS, battle content onry!. Take a peak at the actual item mall free MMOs, youll see most of them suck worse then FFXIV even 5 years into their lifespan.

See, and now I can't even be bothered to watch it.

Honestly, regardless of how good Old Republic ends up being, a good 60% of its player base is going to be people who are playing it because it is basically KOTR 3 with an online metagame (definitely a great idea) -- which could, very possibly, hurt the enthusiasm of its online player base. Only time will tell, but as great as having a fully fleshed single player experience could be for an MMO, the fact that its piggy backing on an established and popular franchise and basically going "Hey, its KOTR 3: Online!" could end up being bad for the actual online element.

Basically, I see it making a lot more money from people who are buying it for the single player and won't ever really get online with it than from people who want it to be a new and improved Star Wars Galaxies (which a lot of my long time friends are referencing as why they are excited for it.)

That all said, I'm picking it up. /shrug/ ...but I'm also have Rift as well as planning to pick up Guild Wars 2 and Tera Online. I like to try EVERYTHING to develop my own opinion -- that's just me though.

Bias and Nerd-bating are the two most popular publicity tactics these days. I remember when people were wetting themselves saying that Rift was going to be a WoW killing super MMO... Look how that turned out.

People underestimate the power of good marketing.

Sure, we're gonna lose people when subs start. That's a fact. But whatever we lose at that point is going to be made up for when 2.0 hits because a majority of those people are going to return, even if to test the free trial, and SE is good with marketing.

I think E3 is going to be the biggest game changer for SE. If they do everything from epic videos to screenshots to having Yoshida himself speak, I think they can wash away the negativity of the past year and truly pull in a huge playerbase.

Subscriptions won't kill FFXIV, even if the majority would leave. And that is because FFXIV 2.0 is coming and that will be a relaunch for the game and this is where things will really start. Right now it does not matter who stays or leaves as the game we have now will pretty much be scratched and a new one will replace it.

Wow, that man has a huge boner for incoherent ramblings and wants to take Star Wars home to meet his parents. Shame he didn't actually check out the game or talk to any of its fans (importantly its non-English-speaking fans) before he declared its imminent death. Might have given him more to say than, "DEATH, F2P games are awesome, Star Wars is awesome, DIE, this online RTS game will now be classified as an MMO, DEATH, cash shops are awesome, DIE". All of which vaguely relates to the external market surrounding FFXIV but doesn't speak at all to the changes that were thought to be making it worth charging for and whether or not that would genuinely entice the player base to stick around or encourage them to flee.

I'm sorry the Star Wars MMO looks like a WoW clone in space I don't care what any fan boy of the game says to try and defend their game all I've seen as far as gameplay bleeds WoW blood from every pour of Star Wars: The Old Republic I'd rather pay for FFXIV and become part of a game thats rebuilding and becoming something so much more. I continue to have faith in this game and I am enjoying being a part of and feeling the winds of change in Eorzea. Every time I've restart my main character it's felt like a completely different game. I restarted when auto attack was implemented and I just restarted again when 1.19 and 1.19a came out I will probably restart when 2.0 comes out as well. Each time I do Eorzea feels like a different world then the last.

    3) Nobody we're going to miss

For the most part, we aren't losing enough to make the game die, and while he brought up some good points, I think he underestimates the ability for SE to keep the game alive until the 2.0 release in which the REAL do or die moment will have come.

You're an idiot if you think SE is going to simple "Not miss" potential players.

Besides, you've forgotten the 4th category.

    4. Those who pay for the subscription just to see how many are left after. If too many left, they will leave as well.

I'm in the 4th category. I play FFXIV for the party factor. No point playing if it's too difficult to find a party. I've already left my character on Fabul due to the fact that the server is too empty to get a party.

    I beta tested ToR.

    It sucked.

Further solidifying the claim I made many months ago. ToR will not kill FFXIV. Final Fantasy fans will play XIV. Star Wars fans will play ToR. Those who are fans of both and have to choose one are not significant enough in number to make a difference.

Also: Cataclysm, RIFT, Portal 2, and a plethora of other games were supposed to be the "death" of FFXIV. This game's demise has been foretold more times than Nostradamus predicted the end of the world (and with the same accuracy).
