I think gaining a positive reputation is equally important. Even if SE makes like +1 gil
after a few years, they at least restored faith in their customers, so they will buy their stuff again (and QQ about everything on certain forums).
Take the gamrTV video as an example.

who the/what the hell is/are gamrTV Weekly? no seriously. this is my first time hearing of them.

One of the many nobody sites/people out there. I placed it on the level of Sankaku, it exists but chances are you won't care/hear of it till they decide to jump on XIV will die bandwagon that rolls to town whenever it makes progress.

I wonder who has the more viable opinion, an internet video game reviewer (and not a reputed one at that) vs. a large corporation like Square Enix. Hmm... Despite Square making some dumb moves over their time, I'm pretty sure deep pockets wins over randominternetdude447's opinion.
Who are these people again?
Oh, that's right, they're nobody.
Moving on...

If you watch any of his other videos, you will see that his "Controller Confessional" segment is usually about a game that he is currently playing.
He just doesn't want to pay for it even though he's probably enjoying it.
Papa was a rolling stone...wherever he laid his barbut was home.

You forget the position FFXI was in. FFXI's prime was when MMO's were not as popular as they are today. Even WoW slowly built up their numbers overtime. It took years to get the amount they have today. This game will never have 2-4 million subs ever. FFXI a far superior product never made the 800K mark, let alone 1million, this game to date has not sold 1 million copies :/ I'm not saying the game will die, but it will fail, and remain a shadow of what it could have been, even if it did good good, it will probably get what FFXI did at it's prime, 500k, not a bad number, but not what was intended when they decided to make this game.
Now that the MMO community is much larger than it has ever been. The million+ marker is not far-fetched at all. Imagine how many are going to come in when 2.0 and PS3 version hits. I would say 25-30k subscribers are on FFXIV right now. When 2.0 comes out, I see old players and new players coming in by a large number, depending on how much SE hypes it. When the PS3 version hits, you will get a large number from those who have been wanting to play but low performance PC's, not to mention Japan is heavily console based and a lot there are waiting for a console release.
The millions+ mark is not far-fetched.
