DPS players being bad at their job is a different issue.
It's irrelevant to healer dps. It doesn't matter if your dps team members are dealing minimal or maximum amounts of dps. As long as things are going well (nobody's taking constant, unnecessary damage, failing mechanics, etc), and healing isn't required, it is efficient to dps. Is it a shame that those dps players are dealing minimum damage? Yes, and that's something they need to work on. Doesn't mean you can't try to contribute.
I'm mentioning this because some of you are caught up with the whole "well, dps players need to do their job right so I wouldn't have to dps". This isn't about dps players. This is about improving yourself as a healer who can offer more to their group than just the minimum.
The current state of the game doesn't require much healing, and provides ample opportunities for healers to dps (when things are going well enough).
Some of you might say, "well I can't always dps because I get matched up with awful players who mess up mechanics and can't avoid aoes."
If you can't dps as a healer because the rest of your team is constantly taking damage, getting hit by avoidable aoes, messing up mechanics, etc., then it's not your fault.
That's a problem with your team members, not yourself.
But that's not what this argument is about. Nobody's saying, "you need to be dpsing 100% of the time and if you aren't then you're a terrible subpar player."
Of course there will be times when you can't dps. And it would be unfair to ask healers to dps during these times. It's happened to me too. I've had to stop dpsing because things happened unexpectedly.
And even as you're dpsing, you still gotta reapply regen, cast esuna, watch out for your team's health, things like that.
There will be times where there is a ton of unavoidable damage that you have to heal through. And there will be times when you head into eight-man content and one healer needs to focus totally on healing so that the other healer can focus totally on dpsing. All this is fine and understandable.
We all agree that healing is our number one job, and yes, we should stop dpsing when healing is required. But for the times when healing is not required, dpsing would be a better use of time.
And I would just like to add:
Choosing to dps as a healer doesn't mean you're choosing to neglect your role as a healer. When I've played tank and dps, I've never run into healers who refuse to heal and only want to dps. On the contrary, healers who dps try their best to balance both dpsing and healing, because they understand what their job is fully capable of.
Choosing to dps as a healer means choosing to go above and beyond, to do more than just the minimum, to strive to become a better player, not just for others but for yourself.
The same cannot be said for healers who choose to stay idle during situations where dpsing would be safe and efficient. Not with the way the game is now. Because this is not the kind of game where healing is scripted to be constantly required.
