I get the "healers must dps" mindset. Not in non raid content.

Would it not be better for healers to get used to dps prior to raiding?

ASTs definitely use their Collective Unconscious even on regular dungeon pulls because the Regen is very potent. Stance dancing is useful in dungeons although not always possible due to CD timer.

I find it useful in normal dungeons I put it up wait for it to activate, then I can dps longer due to the extra buff on large pulls.

So you think the jobs are defined by non-gameplay related things like text descriptions and appearance? Like I said earlier, that's what I've always felt the "healers should only heal" arguments are based on. Whereas when discussing how the game should be played, I find it much more useful to look at the actual gameplay: the abilities, the battle design and all that jazz. Starting from these two different points of view, there isn't any fruitful discussion to be had, because one side is looking at how things look like and the other how they actually work.

That said, at least what everyone can agree on, is that the primary job of a healer is to keep their party alive. The difference in opinions is if after that they should contribute in another useful manner (DPS) or if it's alright to just leave it at that.

If the party walked out of there, and you completed it... then its only your own BS you're stuck on... and whopping 2 minutes isn't going to kill you.

The end result is... did you complete it... or did the party get continuously wiped and fail... well if you walked out of there as a success... you win... game over...

Sometimes it's not a matter of "what's necessary" but "what can be contributed," all of the raids in this game are scripted, with little to no randomness involved, so it's not necessary to standby just to be ready to throw out a heal when needed.

The other players in the party are not scripted. They can do random stuff that require the healer to react fast with enough MP in reserve. Especially during AoE phases and one-hit mechanics

In our raid group the OH was SCH who did dps whilst i was main healer as WHM. Never been kicked from raid groups or PF for not doing dps and i've cleared A12S multiple times now with my team.

So its not NECESSARY or a REQUIREMENT of the role to do DPS as a healer and is more about personal preference.

People can keep on being mediocre if they wish to be. The rest of the party can also kick said individual if he's not pulling his weight.

Sometimes I really wonder if the mind of some people works like a one-way bottle; it's not a question of only heal vs. let your party die. If you have the time to help your party by pressing more buttons without the risk of letting anyone die, you should do so. And that includes all classes. If you're anxious or unsure, it's ok to hold back. Being contempt with mediocrity forever, however, is a really detrimental thing to do. Although it's your choice.

I only have to ask healers who only heal one thing. What do you do when no one needs healing? Stand still twiddling your thumbs? At what point does a DPS or a tank get to stand still and have a lovely little rest?

"It's not bad tanking, just inferior CD usage!" - Tank that doesn't want to use CDs.
"It's not bad MNK DPS, just inferior positionals!" - MNK that doesn't want to use positionals.
"It's not bad DRG DPS, just inferior combos!" - DRG that doesn't want to use Blood of the Dragon.
"It's not bad SMN DPS, just inferior DoTs!" - SMN that doesn't want to use DoTs.
"It's not bad BLM DPS, just inferior use of fire magic!" - Ice mage.
"It's not bad support, just inferior TP/MP regeneration!" - BRD/MCH that doesn't use songs/turret.

Yes if the healer goes down and there's no one left TO do it... sure I will... but expecting me to heal everyone else because like... "its your job and stuff and properly utilizes your character because you're a healer too"... is living in your own little world.

Because that's literally what you're doing here.... to the healers

And saying if I don't heal it makes me a "bad summoner"....
