An enhancement would be a separate item. i.e. your scripture weapon would be modded with it.
The whole point is that content would offer different rewards that complement each other rather than conflict.

I wish materia had no limits to max amount of melding per piece of gear. If a weapon could be boosted indefinately it would never become obsolete. Though that would require the iLevel change based on stats. Its annoying to be forced to re-gear all the time. I just want to play for fun.
EDIT:
-Crafters could optionally make materia
-Every weapon could be i280
-Every weapon could have bis stats
-Its just a matter of glamour choice and maybe enchants like 'gillionaire' which would increase money obtained from kills or exp/tome/drop rate enchants, etc.
I feel like gear is pointless in the game design currently. We always upgrade to something else and throw obsolete stuff away. We usually glamour our favorite sets. They could make a single set of relic gear for us and remove all other gear and just give us fashion for glamouring and not bother allotting stats to the fashion.

I wish FFXIV started with horizontal progression but it probably will never have it. I play both WoW and FFXIV. In WoW many times certain gear pieces like trinkets and accessories are not replaced even if a higher item level piece comes along because the stats are so good. Not to mention that sometimes that trinket that has amazing stats can titanforge up to a higher ilvl. The problem with it is that many groups ask for a certain ilvl but giving up the lower ilvl, best stats items can mean a pretty good dps loss even if it's replaced with a 30 ilvl higher piece. Horizontal progression adds more customization to characters but it also becomes expected because it boils down to BIS anyway. I am expected to have 4/6 tier pieces. It makes for a good chunk of dps and sometimes can mean the difference of being sat or not for raid alongside other factors like RNG legendaries etc. However, sometimes when I play WoW I miss how in FFXIV if I had the skill and the base ilvl I almost could instantly go raid. The door to raiding is wide open in this game even if many players never decide to do it. Horizontal progression would gate possibly very skilled new players from entering because they are expected to have certain tier items which are too amazing to do without.

This game needs some horizontal progression badly. :/

speak for urself :P not for me thank you ^^
well theres one thing that FFXIV is good in and thats keeping old content relevant.
With ur new system , the old content would die and new players will have it harder.
Unless they add some sort of chance u get something like legendary materia doing a lvling/trial roulette :P
I mean im not a dev , but if u look at it from a dev point , and u have to balance all of that stuff out u mentioned , then it would be a hell of a thing to do so :P
If they add something like that , the effects have to be so minimal that they dont weight that much into encounters.

Easy fix. Raids should give armor, primals should give accessories, Diadem/PotD/Relic should give weapons. And dungeons should give everything....but weaker.
I doubt it will ever have it. But it should not put all its eggs in the same basket.

We're limited on data so we're limited on our creativity and your fun is limited. BDO is a nice escape when I'm tired of FFXIV's content for the day.
Been years since using this forum. @_@

I'd personally like a system that lets you continually upgrade gear, instead of completely replacing it. Like having artifact gear/weapon that you can upgrade through content. But also have filler gear drop from dungeons and raids. Sort of like relic equipment, but with less grind.
