Pretty much the same, ive gotten quite a few people into the game this way :PI work in the game industry and yeah, just about everyone around me has heard grim things about FFXIV. Instead of being rude or dismissive, though, when they find out I'm playing they're honestly curious about it and ask why.
Usually what I do at that stage is to boot the game up on my work laptop, explaining a little about the history of the game as I do so. I then log in and let them wander around a bit.
Almost unanimously at that point they are blown away by the visuals and questions change from "why do you play" to "when do you play and what class should I focus on."
Schoolgirls, tentacles, and upbeat music.. something is wrong here. lolOnce your friends knows that you play Gal Gun, playing XIV is no problem to them :]
It will all change in 2.0 if Yoshi-P delivers.
I like this point you brought up, it is definitely a hurdle this game is going to have to jump. I have finally managed to get one of my friends who left to try the game again after 1.19 and he said it was vastly improved. But as soon as he found out about having to pay leading up to 2.0 he got very iffy. I think this game needs to be able to stand on its own merit soon, hopefully it will come 2.0 cause i dont want to have to talk my friends in to trying this game. I want them to want to do it on their own. And i think that due to the initial launch of this game it is going to be very hard to get new players.
this is also how i get my friends to come back cause they all unanimously agree that the visuals are stunning, and they go on to say that the advantage FF has is it wont look dated in 2 years like say swtor will. However after getting on and getting beyond just the visuals, the game doesnt have quite enough to keep people yet. I hope this changes soon as i would like this to be a game people dont question.I work in the game industry and yeah, just about everyone around me has heard grim things about FFXIV. Remember in high school where you were pressured to fit in with the right cliques?
Dumb right?
*eye roll* My motto has always been: "Do what makes you happy, even if other people think it's retarded."
Who the hell cares about what others think?
I play the games i like, not the ones others do. Otherwise i would play WoW and CoD....
@ OP
I've always been a deviant and I loved trolling those fucking backwater, pre-pubescent degenerates bashing XIV and glorifying WoW for the piece of shit it really is. Bottom line: I'll always favor J-RPGs over W-RPGs with very few exceptions - Namely Dragon Age and Mass Effect.

I've been trying to get a friend to play FFXIV but she is mostly interested in playing Aion, which she tries to get me to play but I prefer to play FFXIV.
You see, with FFXIV I don't feel entitled to have all of the rare equipment because it isn't as easy to acquire as rare equipment in some other games. Rare equipment in other games are more easily obtainable, in fact, too easy to even be considered anything more than just Uncommon. Grade 5 Dark Matter is just as easy to find as an Epic. lmao
Maybe a bit overstated but hell, the Mask of the Mortal Hex i found took a few good visits to Natalan, and thats not even a "blue" item. :P
geeks bullying geeks? the irony
I heard they gave out a Panda as a pet with the new expansion. Not really enough to convince me to buy it, but Aion looks and seems like another Flyff game. The whole spontaneous-wing-generation angle has been overplayed, especially with Sephiroth, Angeal and Genesis. Come on, the guy's got three angles in the one wing alone. Anything more and it'll look like one of the Wright Brothers' botched blueprints.
