They could have at least replaced a raid boss with it and made it challenging. Replacing trash with it completely boggles my mind.
This reminds of the game "Final Fantasy 15" by SE.

Now I know why they didn't want to tell us where to find it lol. Easy way to upgrade my other classes. Kill two birds with one stone lol
Oh I get it, so it's replaced even if I don't unlock it. I just don't get the token. I kinda liked the succubus trash. Oh well.

Many people hated the succubus trash (and let's face it, I've seen 3 wipes in a row to it personally with not much to be done about it).
Bad thing about Proto-Ultima: People are supposed to still pass DS without much of a hassle so difficulty is laughable.
Good thing about Proto-Ultima: Couldn't expect it to be hard anyway. Besides, it has some more evident dps check so if people in DS are that bad so not to pass it they get slapped.
Literally advertised as "24-man trial"They never said it was a trial to begin with.
What they did say was that it wouldn't be like Odin (a standalone trial/instance) but would be added in a different way. With that said, having it reduced to a direct trash boss replacement is a shame, since the issue with Odin was that the reward was essentially glamour (when people were hoping for i130 drops at the time), not that it was a separate instance.
It was never outright stated, seems like it was more implied:
http://eu.finalfantasyxiv.com/pr/spe...838.1488344907
"Experience the fierce battle with Proto Ultima originally seen at Fan Festival 2016 in Las Vegas!"
Which, at said fanfest, WAS in fact a unique 24m trial.

So, while they never definitively stated it as a trial according to the interviews I checked per se, it was definitely hinted very heavily at.
I haven't been on the forums long...everyone usually get this doom and gloomy around patch time?

While the forums aren't COMPLETELY about complaining about content, there's still plenty of that to go around. Folks are far more likely to rant about something they hate than gush about something they love, particularly on the General Discussion forum.
That said, there's plenty of reasonable discourse, as well.
Yet provides no source(s) of such. Good job.
All SE stated was that you'll get to face P-Ultima in the patch, as 24-man content. While it was natural for players to assume it would be a standalone instance, SE never advertised it as such. The fact Odin was brought up and how they weren't going to go that route was an indication:
In the end, what happened with P-Ultima is what was advertised: A 24-man fight in a new place (compared to Fanfest, which was at Azys La).Famitsu: At Fan Fest we enjoyed the 24-man Proto-Ultima fight. Was it created solely for the event?
Yoshida: We plan to implement it in a patch for those who were unable to attend Fan Fest. You might want to look forward to how you access the fight.
Famitsu: Will we be able to play it in-game?
Yoshida: Yes, the release schedule will be similar to the Odin trial. Since that trial was stand-alone it led to the problem of people no longer queuing for it as time went on. We’ve taken a lesson from that and we’ve put Proto-Ultima in a new place, so please look forward to where it’ll be.
Famitsu: Will it still be a 24-man fight?
Yoshida: Yes.
