It's funny this thread was created..last night someone was telling me how in WoW they purposely took someones name and how you could do that fairly easily in WoW. T.T
I don't think that is a good idea....in a game like this where you can have a last name, just be a bit more creative ^^ Make your character original!
Come to Zodiark, I have seen at least 3 people with an FF canon name today alone, including someone with something like four e's at the end of Strife.
I'm pretty much in agreement with everyone else, there are enough names from anime/manga, games, cartoons, movies and celebs (including letter switch around) that I feel this would serve no real use and just create frustration for returning players.
Imagine if you took a break for an extended period of time, like I had to because of work issues, and then when you come back the first thing you have to do is think of a new name, which is then followed by confusion as your friends and FC (if they didn't kick you) are bewildered by who you are.

A year of inactivity on a level 1 character does not qualify as a "break", extended or otherwise. That's starting up the game for the first time during a free trial and literally being so uninterested that they couldn't be bothered to complete the first few quests. They aren't coming back, and even if by some miracle they do, they probably wouldn't even remember what their character name was in which case changing it doesn't hurt a thing.
It probably doesn’t for a level 1 but if the criteria is simply 12 months inactivity, then much like the system for housing demolition, it could affect more people than just those inactive level 1 accounts.A year of inactivity on a level 1 character does not qualify as a "break", extended or otherwise. So just keep it to level 1s who have been inactive a year. Problem solved.
Not necessarily, Square Enix would likely look at inactivity if such a system was implemented. I am well aware that this is not FFXI, but when I played that if you went inactive after three months, your character was moved to some sort of limbo area and it would become completely irretrievable after exactly one year of inactivity regardless of level and this was an MMORPG that encouraged you at the log in screen to have a life outside of the game.
Quite frankly I'm happy with no such system being in place. The inactive characters are not hurting anyone and I'm sure most people can survive not being "InsertpopularFFcanonnamehere" with out being too wounded.
I sorta have that issue with my first name. I've used it since 2010 before the so called "Ice Witch" came to be, and some people think I got it from LoL.Lol that's my problem. This character name is one I used quite a while ago and it's Noctis as in the genitive from of Nox (Latin for night - so she's sort of Chandra of the night - was originally a moonkitty so it made sense sort of ) and no relation to FFXV but now everyone thinks my character is unoriginally named after that Noctis.![]()

Just because people think they 'might' do it based solely on inactivity does not mean that's how it would happen. That's why I (and others) have suggested that both Level AND inactivity be the qualifying factors.
Yes, but it doesn't mean that they will do it by both either. Like I said, at the end of the day those level 1 inactive accounts aren't hurting anyone. They don't prevent you from playing the game at all in any way. If the name someone wants is taken they just simply pick a new one, its not the end of the world.
I also don't think a system like this should be implemented just because someone is miffed that a popular character name is taken. If it benefitted the actual game and community as a whole in some way, then I'm all for it but not because a few people want to be named the same thing as a character from their favourite TV show or game.
Not to mention that simply deleting level 1 accounts that are inactive might not necessarily free up a name. I have an alt on another server that I made to play with a friend, said friend never joined the game so that character is level 1. My FC mate also has an alt with the same name as his main on another sever and, you guessed it, its level 1. Just because a character is level 1 doesn't mean its on an inactive account.
