Naming Right. You may not use any name or other intellectual property belonging to Square Enix or any other third party in your use of the Game (for example, naming a character after a celebrity, company, product, or superhero).

This is a terrible idea which would make people LESS likely to resub because their name was taken. It could also lead to griefing by people snapping up names of people they know will come back to the game eventually and then holding them for ransom.

There are a lot of people who resub after a major patch, or who might only get to play at certain times of the year; I've kept my sub up continuously, but god knows I barely have time to play towards the end of the semester, and busy season at work. My FC also has people who are in the military and thus are unsubbed for long periods of time because they know they won't have reliable internet access for a while; it would be pretty awful to punish them for serving their country by having them come back to find someone else using their name (The fact that they can't own houses is punishment enough, really).

I mean, I would prefer everyone use an original, possibly even lore-based name (Except for Lalafells. They can keep naming themselves after food, it's more accurate anyway), but just because I'm sick of seeing names like 'Sephiroth Stark' and 'Daenerys Strife' doesn't mean they should lose them if they take a break from the game.

It gets annoying when I want to have X name on a server while that person hasn't logged in for months, if not, years. Frustrating.

Personally I'm glad there aren't many active players running around with absurdly abused names like Darth Vader or Cloud Strife.

Have some creativity when naming your character, and then it won't be a problem. If you want to bandwagon onto the small number of over-used names (and their variants) that rip off popular culture or previous FF titles, I have very little sympathy for your plight.

I agree with what most people in this thread are saying. I currently have 8 characters and i've invested quite a bit of time to come up with a Lore friendly name for these characters, which would suit the personality and looks i had in mind for them. I've basically made those characters, with the intent to use them when ever i please and to reserve the name, just in case someone would snatch it away right before i would actually create the character.

Each of those characters have their own background story, i could use for a story i'm writing for my main character. I would be ticked off if someone would see the name of one of my low level characters and would claim it for themselves through a feature such as this. That would mean, that i suddenly have to come up with a new name for the character in question, while investing time to come with it in the first place. Afterwards, i would have to change the name of that specific character throughout the story i'm writing.

Just because someone else wanted to have that same name.

I'm sorry but, no. I won't support that type of feature. If a name has been taken by someone on your server, please think of another name for your character instead of claiming the name for yourself by forcing someone else to rename their character.

They shouldn't only delete lvl 1-49 chars, but all chars with popular name. I think we got enough Natsu, Erza, Naruto or D4rk Sasuke

I came from a game that did this once.

What REALLY happened was that the vast majority of such names were snatched up to be resold on a black market of sorts. You'd hope this would let you get your desired 'popular name', but the reality is some script kiddie out there would create an automated system to take it first. I never heard of anyone actually getting names like 'Cloud' or 'Terra' after the inactive character name wipe occurred in that game (aside from watching them pop up on less than reputable sites asking for real life money), but it DID lead to a massive rise of active characters with dictionary names like 'Obscure' and such. (The game did not have a first/last name system.)

Oh, and it also caused a few impersonation cases, some of which I personally had to become involved in myself, for I was a volunteer moderator for that game.

Essentially what I'm saying is it's far more trouble than it's worth.
