I don't think mythologies and folktales are copyrighted, though.A little off topic: Isnt it kinda funny that taking known names for your character is kinda against the TOS, yet SE loves to take their beasts and enemy from mythical tales? They even wrote in the lore book that there was a famous ninja called Sasuke. Also dont forget all the puns in the game that are taken from our world.

Ah, my mistake then (i took it to mean my originality was being brought into question). I simply question the need for such actions as proposed by the OP, when so few bother to emulate the character for which they are named for. I say this as a fan myself of many different anime, gaming, and comic culture. It's an issue of my own, and something i try to ignore, threads like this just seem to highlight it.

I was thinking this Sarah Connor xDalready used in real life by a singer

Others have brought up WoW and in that game I agree it can be really helpful, both because you can only use the name once per server (well, now a few times thanks to connected realms, but still...) and the game design also strongly encourages creating many characters because you need one character per class you wish to play and player factions make much more of a difference than grand companies. In FFXIV though, you can have a first and a last name and character creation is not as generally encouraged by game design, so if you run into a problem where your name is already taken, it's probably because it's extremely unoriginal and you just need to try a bit harder. People do come back after even prolonged periods and if they come back to having lost their name, it may very well make them immediately quit again, all because you really felt you couldn't live without being named Cloud Sephiroth or whatever.

That's me but I don't really care. I don't see myself and being cool and edgy I just took a name from a character I like and that was it.
No real intentions I just did. Not fair to really label people like that as if you know what's going on in their mind when literally nothing was going through mine when I chose Junko Enoshima.
I just don't give a shit.
Not going to happen. There's always the potential for a retired player to return. If someone tried to return and they noticed their name was gone, it would instantly them make not want to play.

I think its a good idea to have a system that automatically renames your INACTIVE character/s after say, 365 days of no subscription*.
Why not, if you don't play much, it wont bother you, will it.
then I guess you like wasting your time if you think SE greatly enforces this. they really only bother with offensive names. That being said, when you mean popular names, I can only guess that you're referring to completely unoriginal people that lack any sort of creativity and name their character after some popular character from a video game or a book or an anime or a tv show despite it specifically stated as being against the ToS. I'd rather names like that be locked out entirely (looking at all you Kirito/Asuna/Sephiroth/Cloud/Squall wannabes) and I certainly report them when I see them because it's against the ToS.
