I can't believe that's actually a rule. I don't see it followed or enforced at all.Switch Servers.
What name do you want that is taken because SE has rules about using intellectual property belonging to others. Come up with something original.

Naming Right. You may not use any name or other intellectual property belonging to Square Enix or any other third party in your use of the Game (for example, naming a character after a celebrity, company, product, or superhero).
what do you even get out of having a name that doesn't even belong to you in the first place
I'm not even talking about ownership by a user, why would you ever want to be someone else when you're already playing as something else
I'm just waiting for a male Au Ra DRK called Shadow Uchiha
"If you have come to the godmother for a favor, you must first pay her your respects"
you got time for that ? that's rly sad...
That being said, when you mean popular names, I can only guess that you're referring to completely unoriginal people that lack any sort of creativity and name their character after some popular character from a video game or a book or an anime or a tv show despite it specifically stated as being against the ToS. I'd rather names like that be locked out entirely (looking at all you Kirito/Asuna/Sephiroth/Cloud/Squall wannabes) and I certainly report them when I see them because it's against the ToS.
They want to be cool and edgy.
Many of them are also too lazy to come up with something original... but then they could also hit the random button and get a lore friendly name, so I guess the "being lazy" excuse doesn't work.
So yes, they just want to be cool Cloudboys purring at each other.
The saddest thing about this is that they rarely if ever, bother staying true to the character. Look up character names like Rem, Asuna, Hinata, Kirito, Sylvanas, Miku, or any other popular waifu bait out there... Nearly all cat girls... Seriously why bother with the name if you wont bother to do the character justice?

What the heck is a 'popular name' in a fantasy MMO unless it's a blatant ripoff of an already existing character? I could understand this complaint in a superhero MMO or something where it can get really ridiculous trying to find a name related to, I dunno, fire or something that's not taken. But the well is far too deep in a fantasy setting to ever have trouble creating a cool sounding name.
Well just choose another name. I mean I was not that creative too with calling her Light, but I like that name and I let the machine decide which surname I have. But taking names from characters just because they stopped playing for a time is not that nice imo. I also started this game first, got some levels, did not like it that much but somehow found my way back to it some months later and since then I am constantly subbed.
A little off topic: Isnt it kinda funny that taking known names for your character is kinda against the TOS, yet SE loves to take the names and sometimes even background for their beasts and enemy from mythical tales? Also they do kinda drop names from literature. They wrote in the lore book that there was a famous ninja called Sasuke. Also dont forget all the puns in the game that are taken from our world.
