So, what's "BBC Standard Received" accent for Ala Mhigans?

How to you think Ala Mhigans sound, when they "speak" English?

We have Raubahn's VA example - "I speak of Ul'dah!"

    Then there's Ilberd v.1.0 and v.2.0

    Or should it be "Germanic"?

Default seems to be "Gimli" / "John Rhys-Davies" Scottish for want of other examples

I'm not so good with accent identification in general, but I've got an Englishman (aka Token Brit) in my FC who laughs every time the Ala Mhigans are around because he associates the Yorkshire accent with rural farmers and has a hard time taking the tough Highlander wartribes seriously.

This is exactly correct, it's a northern yorkshire accent (think Sean Bean and the starks in Game of Thrones), I thought it was a strange choice too considering Ala Mhigo seems very Moroccan and Middle Eastern in its aesthetic, and having everyone speak like they are from the north (or as they would say t' north) of england is jarring to me.

Considering the Highlanders naming conventions it would be easy to assume that the language spoken in Ala Mhigo would resemble german.

However, there is a hidden part of those conventions not covered by the official source but seemingly present ingame. Namely, the celtic/irish surnames (Cotter, Lodall, Aldynn, etc.)

This leads me to believe the language would resemble the early celtic/germanic languages in the 12th to 14th century which very likely would leave the accent shown in todays Ala Mhigans.

As another British guy I can also state that Ilberd's accent is very similar to versions of the Yorkshire accent. It doesn't bother me at all - I'm rather glad to see that not only is FFXIV making excellent use of British accents it isn't shying away from some of those that aren't common in the mainstream media.

Ishgard is heavily inspired by French culture but they don't speak with a French accent. It shouldn't be terribly surprising, then, that Ala Mhigans don't speak with a German accent despite being inspired by elements of German culture.

They are audably based on the north of England. Some people say north Yorkshire (Hilda) but a lot of them seem to be more northern Newcastle (for example Ilberd who's VA comes from Newcastle).

    Hilda is north Yorkshire?

I must move there on the instant then. Something about her voice grabs me hard by my jimmies, fire all the way up and down, that voice.

I am from Tyneside & Ilberd is **DEFINITELY** Yorkshire. Not even remotely close to a Newcastle accent.
