    like i posted, the mob was still losing MP. i just wasnt absorbing it anymore. The log would tell me "Phia loses 354 MP" then the next line would say "You absorb Zero MP".

    I'd guess the game does not take the enemy's MP situation into consideration when giving this message. Most likely Phaia was already dry and the 354 MP lost was overkill.
