You guys have been very helpful in answering the question. I guess I just didn't understand the complaining. I tend to see myself as a "good" mentor, so the fact that people were saying such rough stuff against mentors kind of bothered me.

I get this a lot, too, especially when I'm playing a different role from the person playing. When I'm on my BRD advising a Tank (I main PLD), I get a lot of, "You're a DPS, what do you know about tanking?" (People oblivious to the requirements of a mentor, probably.) My response generally is, "Check my search info." Typically upon seeing my full cadre of 60s they tend to stop and listen... ^.^;;

Most mentors tend to showcase a very low skill level and also have very low patience level. Mentor's should have a decent aptitude on the topics they're trying to teach as well as have patience to assist new or under performing players in reaching new levels of skill.
Fixed that for you.... I highly doubt it's most, but I won't argue that there are a lot.

Cause when you have a mentor acting like a d***, rushing everything and refusing to explain a strat to a new player....well, it tends to generate negativity over all of them, even if it's not fair for the good ones.
I've actually seen more non mentor helping newbies than actual mentors xD (some of them even stating "I just want the mount" ^^")

People don't know how to take criticism anymore, and bad play is rewarded with with a coddling mentality. Yes, this is a casual game for the most part - that doesn't mean people need to walk on eggshells in fear of getting reported for pointing out things. This whole 'please don't say anything even slightly negative' mentality that we seem to be going towards and the devs seemingly pushing towards it is creating a disturbing trend.
Perhaps so, it's hard to say as we don't have any hard statistics. My own experience is anecdotal at best but from that experience I've far more mentors than I thought would be possible either be toxic or asinine or just outright under perform on a laughable level. It's a pretty depressing thought given I myself wear the crown with the intent to help people if requested or just in general to give out a few pointers here or there if there are some blatant signs of lack-of-game-knowledge.
Because there's a noticeable trend among people wearing the mentor crown that they act in very non-mentor ways. They won't help new or struggling players or even complain about their performance. They are suppose to be examples of good player etiquette (as that box we all tick indicates) but there are many who are far from it. Now, a lot of this is SE's fault. They give too many rewards for being a mentor, so people who just want the mount abuse Mentor Roulette. They need a specific mentor feedback system for mentors so bad mentors who don't uphold good player etiquette can be reported and have their status removed.

Mentor: You know you're not really geared enough to pull all of that. I don't think I can heal you through it all.
Player: Shut up! I'm the tank and I'll pull want I want!
*Pulls whole room and promptly dies.*
Player: WTF!? Why didn't you heal me?? You suck as a healer, especially for a Mentor!
Mentor: .... /facepalm

As above, there is the other side that doesn't get mentioned as much in the forums.
I landed in ramuh ex the other day. I explained the first few mechs, but no-one really grasped them and we wiped a fair few times. Just before abandon I was told I was going to be reported for not healing the people marked for chaos (or w/e the buff is called, the one where you walk slowly towards the boss and get one shot), despite explaining how this couldn't be healed through and that if the marked people weren't released, they die.
some people expect you to be able to one-man carry the whole team through every fight if you're a mentor. How dare you not heal the unhealable mechs...
Y'know somehow I've never died to that even when I didn't get released. Even at 50-cap it was never enough damage to kill me. It hurt for sure, but it never killed me.I landed in ramuh ex the other day. I explained the first few mechs, but no-one really grasped them and we wiped a fair few times.
