Using macros on a PLD is limiting you too much. It's a really simple class and you shouldn't limit yourself so much, but stay flexibel to get the best out of your toolkit.
If you don't use a wait command between cool downs, the macro will just use the ability at the top until you press it again. It saves space on bars and saves you swapping between bars as much. This is a godsend when using a pad and often can save you from that panic moment where you're not sure which bar you are on and which you need to swap to. I'm pretty sure the .1 of a second delay won't be missed by most players.

You have enough room in the cross-hotbars to place every usefull skill on PLD while still keeping full control on what you use and when.

By cross hotbars I'm assuming you mean where you change from one 16 button configuration to another. Well it's that swapping process that macros help to avoid, if you press a wrong combination it can put you on the wrong page, do that at an inoportune moment and it can lead to that oh shit moment I was talking about. If you can have all of your main buttons on on bar, this is less likely to happen. Maybe you are perfectly confidant with swapping out, but I prefer the knowledge that everything important I need is there on one bar

You get 32 slots without changing pages with extended cross hotbars.

No, "cross-hotbars" as "hotbars for controllers".

    Left trigger = 8 slots
    Right trigger = 8 slots
    Left+Right = 8 slots
    Right+Left = 8 slots

With this, you have 32 slots without any real swapping. 17 class skills, 10 jobs skills, 5 cross-class skills.
Personally, I also set my x-hotbars so that the swapping button only switch between two of them, and the second one is where I put skills I don't need rapidly, like Protect or Raise, or the Limit Break...

Yeah, pretty much all jobs except SMN and SCH get away with just the 32 slots from crossbar 1 and the extended crossbar. Even then, it's not like hardswitching between bars the regular way is difficult after a bit of practice - it becomes muscle memory.

This is what I mean. I've noticed that occasionally when things are getting a bit hectic if I miss press a hot bar switch I lose track of where I am and which bar I need to swap to and the panic sets in. With all important buttons on one page this isn't a problem. Macros help with this if I have to take a very minor dps hit as the price for this, it's a price I can live with
