The problem here is less that current-AST can't compete with SCH and more that AST so greatly outpaces WHM in what it brings to a group that the ideal composition involves bringing the best of both worlds.

This. AST is just so much better than WHM in every single way that they'd rather just get rid of the WHM and bring AST and SCH instead.
And SE seems to have no idea what to do about this either. They seemed to think buffing balance to ridiculous heights was somehow going to fix things...
