Here is a PVE example. The developers add Zurvan "Ultimate" - a fight that can only be queued solo or in a full party in the Duty Finder (no in-betweens), and has a few interesting gimmicks to it:
-Mechanics are random, meaning that players cannot simply memorize a script and perform adequately at the fight.
-Rewards are only given to players who can consistently clear the fight solo approximately 50% of the time, and 70% of the time in a full party.
-You are only given one chance to clear the fight per attempt. A wipe counts as a failed run and hurts your overall clear percentage.
-Zurvan has a programmed "smart" AI that will constantly ignore tank aggro and deliberately target the lowest HP person in range so long as they fall below a certain percentage of HP. To compensate for this, his overall damage is not insanely high.
-However, he will have constant adds that will spawn and respawn throughout the fight. These adds will heal him, perform repeated CCs on you, and will also target anyone whose HP falls below a certain percentage, requiring healers to be on point. The adds can be CC'd, as can Zurvan, but after 3 successful applications of the same CC he and they will become immune for the next 60 seconds, requiring players to use their immobilization abilities intelligently.
-He will be able to use his ultimate more than one time per fight.
-Any player can queue into this mode, regardless of their experience. Square can provide a sort of "Stone, Sky, Sea" for this fight only that does not affect a players' attempts-to-clears ratio, but it will give no rewards; it is purely for practice only. However, there is no requirement that players use this SSS. The game will try to match players with higher clears with one another, but if suitable candidates are not found, will throw players of any experience and skill level into a Zurvan Ultimate with one another.
-Due to excessive harassment reports from unprepared players being reamed out for ruining the "ranking" of higher-tier players, Square has now opted to disable text chat for this mode. Guess how many people will be willing to queue the solo version in Duty Finder now?
...That is basically what is going on with Feast right now. I'm sure I'm opening myself up to tons of nitpicking here on how my example isn't 100% accurate, but know that I'm trying to frame this in a reference that primarily PVE players can understand. I'm certainly not opposed to a different method of dealing with egregious harassment in PVP games, but completely removing any strategical integrity from the game is NOT the solution.
