    People underselling at a loss?

ok I understand underselling your competitor but this I don't understand. Why would someone sell dragon fangs for 17 gil if its inherent "sells for" value is 27 gil.... it literally makes no sense :T

I mean unless theirs some misguided and generous soul out there who wants to help others they could still sell it at a few gil higher than "sells for". I'm not even gonna touch the under priced stuff because you'd turn a profit just by getting rid of it to an npc. which I thin could be against user agreement idk.

Either way it clogs up the market and should be patched to where you can't sell something for under "sells for" without getting a notice that your taking a loss.

I've done this with a few things. What happens is i'll need to craft something like dragon fang earrings for the daily GC turn in. I buy some dragon fangs from the market but no one is selling just 1 so I buy 10. The leftover fangs I throw on market in case someone else needs them. I could try to take over the dragon fang market or somehow profit off of them, but I have over 100 mil and the storage space on my retainer is worth far more than whatever I would get for the dragon fangs so I sell them as cheap as possible to make sure they sell.

Because to me the person that buys the item will be happy either way if they just flip it to a NPC or actually use the item. The NPC gives such a low amount of gil for most items that it's basically the same as discarding the item to me. But to someone else getting an item for 1 gil may be a big deal. I also try to do my part in keeping as many items in circulation as possible rather than having it removed forever. Inflation on my server is already bad enough.

I actually did this by accident once. I was getting undercut constantly over an item and ended up listing mine as lower than the NPC price. To which I wasn't paying close attention to. Ended up just giving it to the NPC.

Hoping and praying someone does this with metallic dye one day.

If my retainers have a lot of room to sell stuff, and it is things that I do not consider worth it to actually try and make money off/would have just vendor'd anyway, I put them in for really low prices.
Of course, I mainly think "I hope someone will be happy to find his mats to be cheap for once " but it's not like I can stop others from buying it just to vendor it. And if that makes you happy, well, that's fine too, I guess?

I just feel that it's such a waste to throw something away that someone else could still have used, so if the room is there, I'll give it out for (basically) free.

I've occasionally given stuff for essentially free (i.e. same as the price NPCs would pay) especially if it's something useful to brand new players just starting off who may not have much gil yet. But I've never actually gone under that NPC price to subsidize someone else's mats.

    Loss-making sellers

Agreed. if you are crafting an item (any, in fact), you will use shards. these sell at varying rates, but overall, around 100gil. That should make the BASE cost of any item, well, at least 100gil, no less, people who sell at stupid prices should realise they are short-changing themselves.

On that note a TIP: when selling a raw mat, ask more and create a stack that can be completely used, don't sell me 10 logs, sell me 9, 6 or 3, i can't do anything with the odd log left behind.

You really expect a seller to know how many of something you need?

For common staples that are almost always used for one thing, it's worth finding out how it's used. With logs, for instance, although there might be an occasional oddball recipe that needs a single log, for the most part, people who buy logs are trying to make something out of lumber. Each type of lumber is made from three of the corresponding type of log.

For a botanist trying to make money gathering and selling logs, it's worth knowing that. Similarly, a miner selling their ore should look up what's needed for the corresponding ingot. (For ores, the number isn't quite as consistent as logs, but they tend to be used in either twos or threes, so selling them in multiples of six should usually give a useful amount.)
