As a healer you're damn well supposed to cast Protect, doesn't matter how useful/useless you think it is. If you forget to cast it, that's fine, but behaving like a brat and purposefully not casting it is just some next-level sh*t; really makes me question the sanity of everyone defending that. How is this even a discussion? Pretty sad when something like this originates from the leader of the most-well known PvP FC on my data center.
Besides, if you seriously think that hardcasting or swiftcasting Protect is a DPS loss that actually matters, you're delusional.

Personal situation aside, let's look at the big picture: Players got into a nasty exchange in PvE content. Not hardly the first time, and guaranteed not to be the last. Remember Brayflox HM speed runs? Remember the topic about a guy getting kicked purely because he was a DRG? I remember it well. He didn't say or do anything bad. Just instant kick. But that's okay right? How about all the instances of "don't tell me how to play my job/you don't pay my sub/just shut up and go"? Cause I can safely say I've never run into THAT mentality in PvP, thankfully.

Let's call it like it is: PvP has a negative stigma that many players simply adopt because others do, and without just cause. "Oh I don't PvP [in FFXIV] because of [my experiences in another game that are only relevant to that game]." Most see no harm in chat being disabled for PvP, but don't kid yourselves, if this was done to PvE content, players would riot. Why then is it okay here and not there? Because you WANT to dislike PvP. Because you want to believe it was some saving grace to a mode that's so "toxic" whether you've tried it or not. It goes both ways. How about tome farmers throwing matches during the Aether Oil step for the new relic? How about the "Oh I'm just here for Garo, I don't care to actually learn" types? How about the guy who openly said here, "Have fun carrying me, cause I don't care if I win or lose"?

Is this behavior okay in PvE content? "Have fun carrying me through Zurvan Ex. I don't care to learn it, I'm just here for the loot/clear." More importantly, if SE dished out a terrible fix for the problem like restricting chat or not allowing players without clears to join a party who has, would that be okay? Really, ask yourself if that would be a good answer. If no, then why is a blanket fix for a problem that is actually minor among the PvP community such an okay thing?

Actually, kicking someone for differences in playstyle is considered valid, even if there isn't an option for it:

I got kicked because my team didn't want me to dps as a healer once. They told me to stop so I did, this ended in selene just healing them until they kicked me. To be fair I was taking hate, but honestly it was easier to heal myself. The tank cheated his way in with a full right side of dex accessories and a full left side of gear that was 20-40 item levels under the content.

There's no way you can justify kicking someone from a dungeon - easy as they are - simply for being a particular job.

Or are we all just going to pick and play what's "the best" for that given instance from now on?

This thread is toxic. Please ban chat from the forums.

    People should trust their healer.
If he asks to pull more to make the dungeon faster for everyone then a tank should pull more and his death will be only on healer (insecure of their abilities healers will never ask for this).
If a healer says it'll be fine without Protect then it'll be only his responsibility if he'll fail at keeping unprotected players alive.

Tank refusing to pull without protect is like a healer who is throwing tantrums about suboptimal dps and refusing to heal. Just let people do their job.

    1. Know your role, what's expected of you, and do it.
    2. Unless the group ends up wiping from flubbing a fight or is asking for tips, don't bother offering "free advice".
    3. Don't hesitate to drop group. Yes the 30 minute penalty is complete bullshit that should never have been implemented, but you'll enjoy life more getting matched later with a more compatible group. If you encounter the same issue again, then it's time you look in the mirror and consider the possibility that YOU might be the problem.

The player tools to police themselves in PvE content are easier to use. A simple discussion or a vote kick is much easier to use. How would players police themselves during a match in PvP? Shall the devs put a pause button if someone activates a vote kick on any team?

I would prefer that general forums had a sticky and a player and all the alts they play be posted and shamed for bad behavior. A title (unchangeable) explaining why someone in such a short period of time could not handle basic human decency. This is more desirable for me then removing chat. But I don't see this happening.

Naming and shaming players has its downsides, of course, and while some deserve it, most would not. We unfortunately can't vote kick in the Feast, but plenty of people have used the reporting system, and plenty of punishments have been dished out for it. On the opposite side of that, many players simply didn't let what happens in the arena bother them that much. We ARE all adults, most of us. It doesn't excuse bad behavior one bit, and many of us have suggested that using this chat feature as a light punishment (instead of a temp ban or the like) would be more than adequate. But with nothing from SE, we're left to believe that to fix the few issues of harrassment or players being nasty toward each other, they've silenced everyone.

Imagine a few people speed/weave through traffic, but everyone gets a ticket or cars become restricted. . . That sounds fair, right?

That is exactly what this is.
