I used to think a bit like this, pretty big into FFXI - to me there were a number of fantastic distinguishing factors with the races (their looks, some of their RSE gear) it was all unique. However, having watched the forums for a while and just how SE has done races in this game, I guess over time my opinion shifted. I think a large part due to the fact that races in FFXIV are far less unique. I'm not saying they're ugly or bad but that each race is like relatives to each other instead of being like "humans" "turians" "krogans" "hanar" (Asari are pretty close to humans but yeh) lol. EQ had a number of unique races, even WoW with Taurens vs humans, or GW with Charr. Probably why I was hoping for a beastial/weird race in FFXIV, but I don't think it'll happen.

So as I read people's logic that there is no good reason they're separate, I actually started to see it too. In FFXIV everybody looks like they've mated with each other enough that differences are starting to breed out and only height and minimal differences remain. So.. yeah, there is no good reason why they're separate I agree - except culture (which is only temporary, culture is meant to be shared, adopted, and changed - it's how it functions anyways, slowly at least).

I wouldn't really put hairstyles to list that makes races unique - especially when we have bunch of hairstyles that are available to all races, both male and female.

Around half a year ago we had pretty much the same thread up, and naturally a few people who think that having the same hairstyle makes all races look exactly the same. For example the screenshots I had back then have the exact same hairstyle as you are using now, does that make them look less Roe or Lala? Or does it make you look less like an Au Ra for using it as well?

I'm surprised this topic has gotten so much attention, so I'm sure they are bound to reply to this topic soon and give us input. Seeing as how the Hempen topic got represented in the same fashion.

What do you believe is different between race unlocking Hempen sets, and race unlocking Hairstyles? It won't make you any less of an AuRa/Hyur/Lalafell/Elezen/Roe.

There's no reason for the himecut(not even a real himecut) to be au ra exclusive, you can't even use the cultural reason, real Domans are hyurs, raen are savages that assimilated to their culture.
