I haven't played any other MMO so I'll just ask, does this happen often on other MMO like LoL or WoW?
This happens every patch too, maintain after maintenance after hotfix.

Can't speak for LoL, but it happens to WoW with content patches and expansions every time.

Hoping to be able to play in the morning then.
Doubt it'll be back up tonight as the cause is under investigation.

This rarely happens on WoW (at least when I used to play it) BUt WoW had a much different maintenance structure. The game was brought offline weekly for a 6 hour maintenance.
That actually sounds like fun! You plan a date, and then all of a sudden, the movie stops. Wait 5 1/2 hours? No way! I'd take my wife to do something spontaneous, like walk around the town square, or go get Andy's (amazing ice cream for those of you who live near one). Wow, I really need to take my wife on a date night. Your comment reminded me to do so!
WoW still has regular maintenance as well as rolling start hotfixes, but at least since Cata it has had regular maintenance and crashes following patches and expansions.
Yes, I have seen this in every MMO I've ever played after patches and I've been playing them since early EQ. Code can do unexpected things. Hardware can do unexpected things. Putting them both together can cause unexpected things, especially with a major change like the cross-server PF. I'm honestly surprised we haven't been down more. I remember days of patches in EQ or EQII or WoW after massive changes were put into place.
You really think the cause is overpopulation? The population of this game has only gone one direction since the wait for 3.1.
It doesnt matter if overall subs are down if half the remaining population (exaggeration, but it gets my point across) moved to Balmung and Gilgamesh.
If 2 servers have combined what an entire datacenter should have for population, there is going to be issues.
