Japanese people are extremely racist, in general.

Hm. Just with my stay in one state (California) in the US alone I've encountered quite a bit of racism, not directed at me but at people particularly of the muslim and spanish descient. Racism exists everywhere, especially in America which is a mixed pot of cultures.

Wasn't one of the largest wars in American history basically between each other over different beliefs? Didn't America also partake in slavery and had a very strong hatred and racism towards African Americans for a very large part of history? Racism also falls in line with prejudice.

But the fact that the Japanese community is the only community really pushing segregated servers really says a lot.

Do you honestly wonder why? In our open beta of Tera a lot of English speakers came in and started insulting us and slandering us. Racism and prejudice exists everywhere.

I never said America isn't racist, every country is racist to an extent. I was debating whether to use that word at all but I thought not using it, my point would go over people's heads. Japan is extremely nationalistic and the side effect to that is racism. But I avoided using "American" intentionally and instead used English, because Japanese players don't know the difference between Euros speaking English and Americans speaking English. So their hate isn't aimed at America, it's aimed at anyone that speaks English.

No, I don't blame Japanese gamers on XI/XIV for hating English gamers. Just the other day I was watching a podcast of someone that went over to Japan to teach English and the first thing he noticed was how incredibly racist (nationalistic) they are and how much of a surprise it was to him.

We can argue the world hates America, because it does. We can also argue that everyone is racist in one way or another and nobody is safe. But that wasn't my point at all. People (especially on these forums) have this huge misconception that Japan is the shining example of a social paradise where everyone loves each other, they respect anyone regardless of where they are from, and everyone should follow in Japan's footsteps. This cannot be more wrong.

I'd be curious to know what the thoughts are on the Japanese forums about this issue. Are they they really all saying they will just leave?

I wouldn't doubt that a lot of the reason Japanese players might not want to play with Westerners has to do with the fact that a subset of Westerners(particularly U.S. players) tend to be louder, more obnoxious(relative), and more rude in general than what they're used to. This however has a lot to do with collectivist vs. individualist culture and a person's upbringing more than anything else, so it's usually something that can't be helped. That isn't to say there isn't some degree of douchebaggery on the part of the Japanese, but that's pretty much a given anywhere.

I would think however that the biggest reason by far is simply language issues as pointed out in another thread. Try setting up some complicated tactics during some hard content, and the synergy quickly falls apart due to the potentially multiple language barriers. Add that to the fact that Yoshi-P wants the game to be easy to access 10 years from the game's launch which requires a way for players to get easily settled in and playing without too much frustration, and you have pretty good reasoning to have region(language)-specific servers.

Do I think it's a shame? Yes, but think of it this way: When you're on a global server, you can pretty much bet that others on it are more than willing to interact and be social than on other servers, being that they had that choice from the get go as opposed to what we have now.
