I've never played FFXI in my life. I'm just saying that it makes no logical sense that I suddenly become inept at everything a warrior does, just because I equip a moderately different large, weighted weapon.

I'm not even suggesting the system change. I just want to costume swords instead of axes.

Ok, without accusing you of nostalgia for a game you havent played, there is a reason for why Warriors use axes.

And its in the lore. As a Warrior you are trained to use axes. And the skills animations reflect this. They are all based around a weapon where the balance is at the very point of the stick youre flailing about. Trying to do the same with a sword would fail as they arent as heavy in one end; the mass is more evenly distributed on a sword.

Also the way we hold axes wouldnt work with a sword as the hands are too far apart. Unless you want to grip the blade that is

That's a problem of animators, not lore. There's absolutely nothing in the warrior quests that teaches you about weapon type. it's all about your inner beast.

“On the northernmost edge of Abalathia's Spine exists a mountain tribe renowned for producing fearsome mercenaries. Wielding greataxes and known as warriors, these men and women learn to harness their inner-beasts and translate that power to unbridled savagery on the battlefield.
In former times which saw war waged ceaselessly in Eorzea, the warriors featured prominently on the frontlines of battle. With the arrival of peacetime, however, their art has descended into the shadows of obscurity, where it remains to this day.”
    — Game Description

Without axes you wouldnt be a warrior.

Alright. Game description doesn't match up with the factual in game lore. You're never taught that axes are integral to how you fight. You're taught to rage out without losing control.

Hell. The armor is more important to your class than your weapon is, insomuch as factual in game lore is presented.

Ingame or not. its still the lore presented. The lorebook goes a bit more indepth as to how the axe is necessary to perform the warrior skills

    Ok,

    Land Waker- lb3
By slamming down her axe with tremendous force, the warrior causes a shockwave which crystallizes the gathered aether ofher companions into a solid bulwark. Upon executing this technique, it appears as if the ground itself rises to form a protective wall.
    Steel cyclone
The signature attack of the warrior, this spinning swing visits destruction upon every enemy within axe-reach. For those caught in its fury, the technique must sem aptly named indeed.

While there is one single phrase aknowledging that the hellsguard tribe were known for their skills with axes and swords i have found no other line in the book recognizing warriors use of any other weapon than the axe.

Besides it would go against the iconography that the devs have been trying to push, with no longer producing shields for anything but paladins and removing paladins daggers- they seem to want to keep the weapon types tied to a single job. Also it would be too much work having to redo every single warrior animation to make them fit a greatsword.

Yet, your base class (MRD) and its quests focus on Axe skills/actions early on. Warrior is basically the advanced levels, MRD covered all the basics behind the weapon.

You can't ignore a class when it is directly tied to the job. The weapons ingame are focused on across all the original classes in this game for their quests.

Almost forgot about this. The Jobs are advancement of the magical part of the fighting skills while the Classes lets you master the martial part. good point.
