Yoshi-P said that this was their plan. This isn't anything new and really, people shouldn't be outraged that SE is doing EXACTLY what they said they would do. I'll even dig up the quote if you do so desire.

But will that starving child in africa give you countless hours of entertainment? Well, I can think of a few ways... but it probably wont' happen. I got my $70 worth of fun and then some from my CE. No two games could give me as much fun as this game has in the past year, at $50+ a game, that's a) sad on other games parts and b) something to be said for ffxiv. The only reason I can imagine epople are complaining is they got used to "free" and want it to stay that way forever.
Here's an idea, if you don't think it's worth it, leave. No one is forcing you to stay. However you're here complaining because you do, in fact, enjoy playing the game and logging hours on it, but you don't want to pay the price, you want it free. Well that time is over, so you complain, say how terrible the game is, in some diluted notion that SE will change their minds. That is simply not going to happen.

Just out of curiosity do you mind elaborating on which ways you think a child in Africa could give you countless hours of entertainment? LOLBut will that starving child in africa give you countless hours of entertainment? Well, I can think of a few ways... but it probably wont' happen.

Also like to point out a business strategy that you would see if you really stopped and stepped back. SE has income from animes, production of other companies games, investor interests, but FFXIV is as others say "bleeding money". But by doing so it is setting up for one of the most guerrilla ad tactics that I doubt any MMO can even hope to try as the resources include ones pride.
You see if you call it still beta or no it doesnt matter it launched and overwhelming numbers marked it as a complete failure. What this does is lower the bar for the common player thinking oh this is going to be garabage and the E3 show announcement is going to be some cheap ploy. Then they get firebombed by the presentation. Then they run to the web to see what people playing are saying.
This is where their failure and the resilient players become a machine for getting people interested. They are there and playing and aren't talking in hypotheticals. Magazine will want to get in and try it and they wont in closed servers. All real footage can be shown and active community is there. So those that stick around are working for the benefit of the game when 2.0 hits baring any mess ups. Also at that time people still playing will tell there friends. On a small level I have already seen it as people went out and got the discounted boxes to play with siblings or friends when 1.19 hit.
EA strategy for secret world and swtor is to house a community before the game launches. SE has that solidified under the noses of an industry and players that tossed it aside. Now the issues with this is will they release the new software at their old selling point? Since the old is in the discount bin for 15-25? So in a way the subscription is proving a point more so then those not going to pay it. That SE is still in this and ironical those that aren't paying but did play caused that just like those that will pay.
