Bear in mind that you can only transfer a certain amount of gil from server to server. Each character you transfer can only transfer 1,000,000 gil that is held on their person, and each retainer transferred can have at most 100,000 gil stored. Speaking from experience, the latter is a hard requirement, meaning you will have to withdraw money from each retainer until they are each at or below 100,000 gil before the transfer is successfully purchased. I believe your character having more than 1,000,000 gil on them won't prevent the transfer, but the excess will be lost to the aether. I don't have personal experience with that, however, so I am just basing that on the sometimes obtuse wordage of official World Transfer information page.

It's still possible to transfer enough money to buy a small or possibly even a medium house on a new server if you split up your money across several characters that are being transferred, since you can transfer up to 8 characters from a single server to another single server with a single world transfer purchase. Just keep this limitation on gil in mind if you choose to go this route as you could inadvertently mess up your plans if you don't plan it out.
