I wear my crown as hopefully an inventation for questions in dungeons and open world. While in dungeons, I'm openly conversational, and will make suggestions in a friendly manner without pressing on the topic if I see someone struggling or if we're wiping on something.

I forget which dungeon, but I was healing on some duty with a sprout or two, and had made helpful suggestions the whole way and saw them improve as we went, but absolutely no one had said a word in chat the entire dungeon. Personally the improvement was just fine with me; that's what I love about helping others most, not the thank yous. But if you're looking for thanks (which admittedly shouldnt be that hard for people to give) you may find yourself disappointed at times.

The question is whether it's going to be worth it FOR YOU.

I do it because I really do just want to help. I've left mentor duties on one role and requeued for that specific duty as a tank or healer just to help. I'm one of the most patient people you'll find. I'm also not going to push my advice or playstyle on others; I'll offer advice if it's asked for or if there's something actively hurting the party or their progress. I try to be an example of a good mentor by my standards.

You have to decide for yourself if you're going to do it, and what kind of mentor you're going to be.

@OP, you can just try it and if you like it, if you find what you are looking for in it, so keep it.

Personnally, i like to help too when i can (and when i'm in mood for that lol like everyone) and i do it with pleasure. When i have seen they were adding the mentor system i was happy about it, so i tried it. But i realized i didn't need this "tag" for helping people, or i won't help more or in a better way thanks to it....so i just erased it.

Imo the mentor system shouldn't gives special rewards or something, if you like to help, you will do it without a gift cause it's your true nature and i find that this mentor system is just corrupted by those people who just want the gifts without taking their "mentor" role seriously.

I met several mentors who didn't know how to play their own job or who were giving bad advices but they had this crown so they were like "i'm a mentor so everything i say is better than what you can say".....interesting.

So ya, try it and you will be able to make your own choice

Had the crown since Day 1 and I choose to remain in the NN. When it comes to the system, I have mixed feelings about - and mixed feelings about the mentors I have seen on my own server.
--Pros: There are actually decent mentors who know what they are doing on my server, and do offer help wherever it's needed. Sprouts tend to get several replies in response to their questions, so at least none of them are left hanging.
--Cons: I dislike how some players can skirt on by with their status, when in actuality, they only do it for the titles, tomes and rewards. All the while, they offer no actual help to new players, get impatient with wipes/slowness of runs, play their jobs horribly, or worst blame others for faults and rage quit.

(I myself haven't ran into any ridicule as a mentor. I quietly help with brief tips here and there, doing my best to offer advice.)

If you seek to help new players and that's all you want to do, then strive to be that mentor

I finally got the crown but I was really unsure if I even want to become one. I just saw too many bad mentors and I kinda feel like, thanks to them, wearing the crown will have people judging you way harder than without. I am also still not alright with getting all parts of mentor unlocked..I mean I got the crafter crown and yet somehow I could still be a battle mentor or a PVP mentor. It would be better to have it restricted to the part which you used to unlock it..and I am kinda sad that there is a achievement behind it. :/

I did run some mentor roulettes and I always feel kinda bad when I have no clue about a fight. You can land in a lot of dungeons and I dont remember everyone of them and if you have a new player bonus, it just feels like its the mentors job to explain it X_X..At least even before becoming one I already tried to be nice to people and explain fights to them but wearing the crown really makes this sometimes a little stressful.

Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

Just dont be like some of the pvp mentors who get vote dismissed from frontline missions b/c they spend 15 straight minutes telling everyone how terrible they are, on Adamantoise there are some Twin Adder Mentors who feel that is productive.

Hm... to be honest for as many peoplebwho whine about mentors I only had good experiences. My first run with mentor was in Sastasha (not first dunge run tho) She asked me if I as a CNJ I would be cool with speed run (first and last time it happened tho). Had several quiet runs. Then one of them randomly approached me to hand me 50 lvl weapon just when I got to that level because he wanted to give back. One of the kindest gestures I have had. My last run I witnessed mentor trying to tell my friend that he shouldn't use cure 3 on one 'victim' to get rebuffed brutally. Then she mentioned about cleric stance healing ... Honestly I usually always listen to advice but I find that most don't want to give it but the last experience made me understand why I have so many quiet runs >.>

Tried it out and so far not bad at all. Had a few sprouts actually ask me questions out in the world or standing around at Quarrymill. Seems that sometimes even in easy things like PotD people expect me to go first and/or figure out where to go more often now (even when not on DRK, which they often do if I'm on a tanking job). However, the one thing I totally hate about mentor is the Novice Network chat - and not because of the novices. The mentors in there can be totally useless and/or abusive, vulgar, irritating. The other day a mentor kicked another mentor for advertising their FC in NN chat, then a mentor kicked the mentor that kicked them, and so on ad infinitum. You'd think they'd realize each and every NN kick is looked at by the GMs (if we are to believe what SE states about kicking). Really, NN chat is the worst and I wish it was moderated even just a tiny bit :/ Other than that, just helping like I always do, just now people know they can ask me stuff more ^_^v

If it's in a duty, it's also possible they queued for mentor roulette. After all, that one does not care if you're a pve, pvp or crafting mentor. it slaps that full crown on you and switches it back to whatever you had on before that..
