Not that I support adding child characters to the game but you could easily get away with it in the same way that Lalafell gets away with it - make it look like a child but call it an adult. Wouldn't work for mini versions of currently existing races, but would work for an entirely new race. Personally I chose Lalafell because I wanted to play as a smaller version of myself and I think the intent of most people playing child-like characters might not be so innocent, but if Lala can exist and not get any backlash (outside of the potato jokes) then honestly it's probably possible.

It is the reason though and they're quite aware of that problem - I remember several comments in one of the artbooks being basically like "We tried really hard to not give lalafells any sexy clothes because thats inappropriate".
There are lots of weirdos out there (I'm female but played a male character for over two years to have my peace) and it would also limit their options about story telling - think about Haurchfaunt and Aymeric! By now Haurchfaunt is a bit of a weirdo - think about those scenes with him and the person hes talking to being 10 years old... think about Aymeric inviting a 10 year old girl for dinner in his private quarters...!

Children really shouldnt be an option in this game.

Also: Games with young, child-like hereos are almost always for a younger audience that you'll find here. Even if I'm still enjoying pokemon in my mid-twenties, this game is more made for kids (and they need a hero they can identify with). This totally isnt the case with FFXIV.

(and yes, some countries are having problem with violence against kids - I remember that they removed the children in one of the early fallout games for the german version. And there is also a reason that you normally dont have kids in Skyrim)

I really dislike that excuse to be honest. That's how Tera got away with the Elin race *shivers*. Thankfully they made it so Lalafells aren't an oversexualized child-like race at all in this game. They just look like cute potatoes.

There are always going to be people who cause problems with anything even vaguely juvenile, but in the end Lalafell are Gnomes, and that's just fine.
