That always confuses me too lol. They are male playing a female character yet want a female playing a female character, I never understood it.
The most common answer I see to this is that male players don't want to look at a male butt while playing.

Everyones different with different reasons I suppose. I am a male that always play male characters because I can't connect to the character unless it's male.
Doesn't matter if it's human, beast, monster etc, just have to be male.
I can play around with female characters at best for short durations for the "new feeling", but I never stay for long.

There are also males who play female chars to bond with male characters.
In my case, it has to be a male X male. Bwahahahahahaah
It's simple to understand if you keep clear in your mind the distinction between player and character. In the current example you cited, one of the reason could just be:
The male player want to befriend a female player, while he's roleplaying a female character that want to love another female character.
(Note: I use the term roplaying loosely, from meaning just the visual appearance to the character's personality)

I know it seems weird a male playing a female character looking for a another female character who is actually female in real life too but personally I have already been with female characters being played by males so I think it would be kinda nice to actually be involved with an actual girl who is playing as a girl
