In that case, why even say your way is correct if we can both be wrong? Basically saying "believe what you want" can easily be seen as "I'm right but I'll let you believe in your delusions"One of... those...? Making statements like these isn't very respectful. I'm not sure if I disrespected you (sorry if I did), but I don't really see the need for it.
Neither you, nor I, can prove that it improves (or doesn't) your rate of rare drop acquisition.
EDIT: I should add that the message doesn't say that it will increase the rate of rare materials, but simply that you will receive higher quality items with better gear. So, even if it does increase the rate, the message as it is written is incorrect. The rarest possible drops are possible with the lowest possible gear.
It's almost the kind of attitude people had about the atma drop rates
Atma drop rates....oh boy. The player base in general could do with a primer on probability and RNG.

You're right, I said it too confidently. I am fairly confident in what I said, but I can't be 100%. You also stated yours matter-of-factly, though. I followed it up by saying we both could be wrong, who knows, /thread. Basically, I said I may be delusional, and I'll let you believe in your delusions
All I know is that through thousands of quick ventures sent between sending them in raid gear, to mid level, to not geared, and there was 0 noticeable difference in return.

They've had it numerous times from people like myself, & if I recall rightly, you too! Not only that but there was an excellent article posted by either a developer or a GM with knowledge here. It still won't sink in, unfortunately.

My combat retainers are all being outfitted with i250 gear. I'm even fully SB'ing it before giving it to them, so I'll be able to just convert it to materia when they get an upgrade.DoW retainers will always benefit from the highest ilvl gear you can give them. Whilst it's true that above a set level they are able to get the rarest items (currently i200 I think) the higher the ilevel the more likely to bring it back they are. They're also more likely to bring HQ versions where possible.
DoL retainers, in a similar way, benefit from the highest gear you can give them. The amount of items returned during normal ventures increases to a set maximum when the gathering stat is increased. In the same way as DoW the higher this stat is, the more likely to get a rare item from a quick venture & have it HQ. Perception isn't believed to matter.
My gathering retainers, however, I just finished kitting them out. I200 MH and OH tools, i200 left side gear, i195 right side gear, HQ, with maxed out Gathering and Perception. Just as Gathering affects amount gathered and then time spent (on targeted runs) to a certain point, so too does Perception affect the chances of HQ to a certain point. I figure, no reason not to get as much as I can.
Unless there's an ilevel issue with ventures in SB, I do not plan on improving their gear until after they hit 70.

Yep both my retainers are level 60, and got both around IL225-230. They don't always bring me back great things. Sometimes I just want to shank em when they bring me fish, however both have brought me multiple times metallic dyes worth a lot of gil that has helped a bunch. You pretty much have to go into it thinking your retainer 9 times out of 10 is bringing you back junk. However they are epic for hunting mats if you need some quick gil or you're saving up for something.

Slightly OT but still relevant as this is a living topic. Has anyone noticed a sudden increase in rare dyes being returned, especially after the latest hotfix? It's as if they boosted it for Christmas glamour. Up until the fix I'd be be lucky to get rare dyes one a week with around 3*8 quick adventures a day. Now one retainer during a set of 8 adventures returns them, sometimes more.
It's just you. I have not gotten rare dyes lately.
