I'm sure he was just trying to be helpful so in future you know how it works. Unless the house is owned by an fc, only the home owner (not tenants) will reset the timer upon entering and receive notices of the house demolition. That being said it sounds like you ran into the bug that seems to be hitting a few people for whatever reason. If your friend that owned the house did go into it before it was blown up, please request them to make a bug report. Good luck finding a house and don't forget to check the ward listings on the hour when you're near the city aetherytes, you might catch a plot that's been opened up.
