"BAAAAAARD!" - 2018
Just to point out, if you do afk to be kicked, even if you do thing else wrong, you can be reported justly. Afking can negatively impact a run, and thus is reportable.
Like it's been said, if you ask nicely to be kicked, and don't say anything that could get you in trouble, you should be fine. GMs look through the chat logs and base decisions on that.
Basically, don't give a reason to get in trouble and you won't get into any even if reported.
And yes, there will be runs where you are basically stuck in a bad situation with no good way to get out; you just have to tough it out and move on. It's called "life"; no guarantees that everything goes right 100% of the tome
Being AFK is not a punishable offense (unless there is proof it was done on purpose but thats another story). Anyone can become AFK anytime for what whatever simply real life issue happens and what was supposed to be 30 sec away from your computer ended up more than expected. That's why there is an AFK reason for votekicking people. If you report to a GM someone being AFK, without the GM having any proof that it was done with malice, the GM will just tell you to votekick the AFK.
However if you ask in chat to be votekicked out, then the group refuse, and then you suddenly becomes AFK, that's more something suspicious![]()
If you AFK without saying anything, you are open to being reported, and if you do it enough, you can get a visit from a GM. People usually don't report after kicking someone for an offline/AFK, however, because they'd just rather get a replacement and move on. That's why if you actually need to AFK, say something and give an estimation for when you'll be back. If you take too long, most of the time people will assume something bad happened...but don't make a habit of this tactic if you're trying to get kicked, since some people have had people try this to get kicked and will report for it. Get enough people reporting on you being AFK like this and GMs will put 2 and 2 together and come knockingBeing AFK is not a punishable offense (unless there is proof it was done on purpose but thats another story). Yes, it is circumstantial; AFKing suddenly after a bad pull, an argument in chat, losing a roll and so one can easily be seen as harassment, and thus reportable. Source: I've reported people who've done thing and had some chats with GMs about it.
Just drop group. The penalty system has been one of the dumbest ideas in the game. If someone decides to drop group because the group is either incompetent or just a bunch of a-holes, that person should not be at fault. The "greater good" concept as it pertains to the DF would have been fine if they had taken that into account, instead of the half-baked one-sided penalty system we have been tolerating thus far.
And to those who think putting up with df group bs is right... No. Eat the penalty and move on. Once they hit three strikes, either via people spewing garbage, or three wipes, drop group. They deserve it.

Eh, I like the penalty... I like seeing a DPS drop after 1 wipe and have to eat a 30min time-out.
However, this situation... there really isn't anything a GM can do or a design to fix it.

You apparently didn't live through the nightmare that was the case before the penalty was introduced. Tanks would bail instantly on instance after instance until they got the cushy instance they were after, leaving helpless groups of three in their wake that often had little alternative but to drop out and wait through the queue yet again. The penalty was not introduced to encourage players to stick with bad groups (though it did have that effect), but to prevent tanks (and the occasional non-tank, as well) from cherry-picking the instances they wanted to run. It was also used with run-in-progress to try to land an instance that was almost finished, to minimize the time spent.
