As I suggested in another thread, perhaps we could have our old name above out new name, but kind of greyed out just for a month or two, so people won't worry about name-changers taking advantage of a new name in a negative way.

It makes little sense to me either, but it has been brought up. XD
I suppose an example would be.. one person taking advantage of or cheating a LS in some way, changing their name so no one knows them, and being able to do it again.
It sounds unlikely to happen, to me.. but I suppose it's possible. So if it would ease people's minds if our old name was shown for a while, I'd gladly accept the annoyance for a while if it meant we got our name changes. :3

Say you take a linkshell/open company/guild/whatever's bank/money/etc and run. Generally, everyone in the group you were formerly a part of will hate you and stalk you and you won't be able to do anything with them any more.

Change your race and name and BAM! it's like you're a different person. In short, you can abuse name/race changes to ditch a bad reputation.

Usually the only linkshells with banks are the ones who are super organized, so if someone grabs the money and bounces, they'll know who has it all, especially since its usually only a few people who have the "bank" in their retainer.

Also, I want to get rid of my character's surname. Surnames make the character name too long. One name only, please!

Either Surnames should become a staple amongst MMORPGs or at least optional, but they should not be abolished at all.

That's like asking how anyone could possibly take advantage of the enemy they see barely standing on the middle of a platform...

I think the old name should remain on-screen, near the new name because not everyone will think to check someone who appears to be a random stranger. It should be out in the open for a while. After a set period of time, old name goes poof~ (Probably better that's it's sort of a longer period of time.. If it were only 2 weeks the person could just not log on for 2 weeks, but the old name remaining for something like 1-2 months seems safer. Who's gonna ditch their char for 2 months? o.o)

Anyways.. just about any situation can be exploited or taken advantage of in a negative way. It doesn't mean things shouldn't be allowed though, if we can find a good way to try to prevent unwanted situations from happening.

Edit: Actually... could make it on a timer that counts down only while you're in-game.. (And then it wouldn't have to be so long - say... 5 days worth of game play - 120 hours), and people would be forced to log in and play for it to eventually go away. Everyone would get to see who they were. No hiding offline till it goes away. :x

If someone steals a bunch of money from their guildmates, what they do is go out and join a different guild/linkshell where they aren't known (which would be essentially every other guild/linkshell in the game). They don't get a namechange and rejoin the same guild.

If someone happens to screw over a particular guild/linkshell, generally no one outside of the guild/linkshell cares. The situation you've described is not a realistic scenario.
