I specifically said to remove Diadem. The issue with diadem is not the randomized stats, it's the content itself is so brutally boring, it very nearly makes your eyes bleed.
Then give ideas. Don't just say "remove this" as it appears you want no replacement at all in your original post. Grinding for gear directly can also be rewarding, or the biggest crap shoot in the world. You have to factor in drop rates, which piece drops from which mob, how many of those mobs there are in a given instance, etc..

    In other words:
Mob A can drop hand armor, OR a crystal.
Mob A has a 12% chance to drop hand armor.
Mob A picks randomly which specific job it drops hand armor for.
Mob A only occurs in one instance in Dungeon P.

The more you add to it, the more your chances dwindle to get Item A for your Job A. Yeah, you could get lucky, but not everyone is that lucky. Look at the countless threads complaining about the atma system.

The tomestone system allows at least some reward for continuing to do objectives. And allows you to eventually purchase the item you want, instead of endlessly farming for the chance at obtaining ones you don't want, to get to the one you do want. This was a major flaw with FFXI, imo. It created an arbitrary time sink.

As for Diadem, I would compare it loosely to FFXI's Dynamis. Another arbitrary time sink, that you would spend countless hours in, trying to obtain a piece of gear. In the early days, it would require large groups of people, and rely on the honor system of 64 people lotting the same item at once. You referred to Diadem as "brutally boring." Try doing it for 3 hours at a time, without seeing your piece of gear drop at all.

I also don't like Diadem, because it's generic and endless loot farming. Reminds me of Diablo III, where each mob explodes into a shower of swords and armor. So you can go too far with how much loot is in a game.
