    I have made small video to demonstrate what I mean.

    At first it shows all nameplates on. After I turn them off, you will notice that I can see nearest targets nameplate simple by looking at them. Also I can hover my mouse over the target and see their nameplate. At the end I'm demonstrating the key which shows all ally's nameplates while holding the key down.

    I have gone through all the options. Yes, It would be nice to have more options.
    Btw, what is FC tag you speak of?

    Turning nameplates off is not helpful at all. I have checked every single option in the game, so that is not an issue.
