This may just be worth sticking around for after all...

Quoted from the New Final Fantasy XIV Roadmap:

    System and Content List PDF:

    Under "Characters" Category
    • Jobs to progress by clearing quests rather than gaining EXP.
    • Job-related quests, abilities, and job-specific gear planned for patch 1.21

Depending on how this is executed and how well I can progress as a solo player, this alone will be enough to win me over.

Well my guess is you will likely need a required level to do the quest, so in the end you do need EXP its just you have to do a quest, otherwise you could switch at 30 to X Job and do all quests and have all skills before 50, right?

The description in and of itself is rather vague. I'd rather they abolish levels completely and have players earn more advanced skills by doing said quests. That way, people who wish to advance have to learn to play the class whether solo or in a party. It may or may not end up that way since 2.0 is supposed to be a complete re-vamp of the entire game.

Think of FFXIV as FFXI in reverse. In FFXI, you picked a clearly specific role and gained progress with the weapons that the chosen job could use. That's not the case here.

The classes you've been playing? They're fanciful names for weapons. Gladiator? Latin for "Sword Agent" - it just means "Sword User" (FUN FACT! That's it's JPN name.) Pugilist? Pugni = Fist = Fist User. Archer? Arc Agent. Lancer - Lance User. Conjurer? One who makes things appear as if from nowhere. Thaumaturge? Miracle worker. Marauder is the only exception - and that's because the JPN name is Executioner = beheader = axeman (But not the kind you'd use on a tree (see why we made that distinction?))

See where I'm going with this? Your "Classes" are nothing but your weapon capabilities. Your capped jobs are nothing but FFXI's little blue numbers that say "This weapon's ability is as good as it gets."

So now, what do you do with your weapon capabilities? GET A DAMN JOB, YOU HIPPY.

But once you have a job, what do you do? Get good at your weapons again? Helllllll no. Get out there and get some REAL JOB EXPERIENCE. Help people, kill things, get the JOB DONE. (Trials.)

In an interview with GamerEscape, Yoshida-san referred to the job system development as a "series of trials." The player will put their hard earned skills to the test by earning new, specialized abilities, traits, and gear by being tested at various stages of their development. These trails start when your class (weapon ability) has reached a level of 30, and more progress will be available every 5 levels after.

It sure beats playing the "job" by repeating the same battle 500 times and then standing around hitting high level mobs until your "Skill" ticks.

Makes more sense. However, sorry to say, but you'll still be out there grinding your ass off, it's just that at the end of the game, you'll have a little more to show for it.

So say you're great with a sword? Become a PALADIN! Great at conjuring the elements from nothing? White Mage. Great at using a bow? Let the hate cool off and buff people or something. (GO BARCHER!)

What I'm looking forward to is cross-class. Great CNJ & THM? Red Mage.

OR BETTER YET - A pugilist that also has alchemy leveled? CHEMIST. Now THERE'S a job that needs to make a comeback.

I don't like this idea....a MMO that doesn't use party play? Not my idea of a good MMO.

Healer strike is ridiculously foolish and accomplishes nothing

I never said that it was to be solo exclusive, just that the players have an option to progress either in a group or on their own. I don't have all the time in the world to commit to XIV - I have a very turbulent financial and academic reality I have to face every day, and as much as I want to develop my character, I'll hardly be able to catch up in the months that full-time players will already be farming endgame instances and gear. Besides, it'll at least set some sort of even ground since most of the full-time players will already be spending time leveling up their other classes and jobs in the meantime, which could potentially mean more gil for you for doing repairs or selling foodstuffs and whatnot.
