Played ff7,8 and 9?? You cant just skip from disc 1 to disc 3/4 to beat the boss and finish.
I started this game last year when i bought Arr. Didnt rushed to heavensward. I focused on msq, getting friends and fc and stuff.
After i finished arr msq wich left me to think "OMG I WANT MORE" then i ordered hw and started doing msq and went on journey with amezing npc thru drivania and abalathia areas... which was amezing.

I have a feeling ur rushing ur new members of fc. you as fc leader you should tell them to be patient and do some storyline. If they dont find it interesting.. Then say something to motivate. Hint something that will happend in msq and do not spoil. If they r still struggling ask then to other stuff. If they r conplaing tell them stop whining < in kinder way.
After finishing FF7 I played the story again a few weeks later. And played the story at least 3-4x again in later years.
FF8 was finishied 3 times, FF9 one time, FF10 I played through 3 times again.
I assume you did something similiar, didn't you?
Or something like this: Before watching Advent Children and after playing Crisis Core (both story addition to FF7) I played the story of the "main" game (FF7) again, because I wanted to enjoy it again.

Sooooo... how often did you finish the FF14 story line? You have 3-6 months between every story patch, so you have enough time for that.

How many players are out there who played the entire ARR 2.0-2.55 story again just before Heavensward to get "really thrilled", like I'd do regarding every other game if new story(-dlc) related to that game comes out?

After all there seems to be a difference (e.g. nobody wants to enjoy that story again) which some people want to deny.

I see where you are comming from, but it's a bit different for FF14.
For starters no single player video game, final fantasy or otherwise, comes out with new story DLC every 3-4 months.
Also new single player story DLC aren't locked behind item level that you need to get by grinding tomestones if you don't want to be left behind.
If you want to re-experience the fight with Emerald Weapon you just need to play the story again, while re-experiencing the fight with Darnus requires 7 other compentent people who are still willing to do the coil.

I DID make a new character to see how Yugiri would react to bumping into an auri ninja when she arrives in 2.2, but there always seems to be things to do with Balipu so I don't really have time for second playthroughs.

I actually did take another character through ARR after Heavensward came out to refresh myself on the details.

I'm glad I did as well. A lot of minor characters come back or are mentioned again that I wouldn't have remembered otherwise and I noticed there are a lot of recurring quotes as well.

Wow, not bad. But well, a third time (including ARR+HW then) or a fourth time (including ARR+HW+BS) will be hard, no? And as I said, nobody is hindered to play the story at all, only because 1/8 of his characters skip.

Maybe a better thing is also this: Just watch the PF after new content arrives.. how long did it take for the first groups for Niddhog Ex to arrive? Taking into consideration that those players aren't necesseraly the worst players skillwise..
I mean, how can people still say that everything important in that game revolves around story and that it's intrinsic to enjoy the game, if there is a huge sample sizes of people enjoying this game without story?
There are people enjoying this game without the story. No one enjoying the story will be hindered doing that as often as they want, even with skip option. There will not be more bad players with 168h+ playtime (sprout time over), just because they spent that time not with MSQ, but with PotD/Diadem/dungeons/fates/anything they like.

I'm currently playing through the ARR storyline for the third time. I would probably have done so more than that if I could on my main character. The problem with replaying an MMO story as opposed to a single-player RPG story is that you have to make a new character each time, and that time doesn't help your main character in any substantial way.

EDIT: I'm actually torn on this overall debate. On the one hand, it's a Final Fantasy game, so the story is a big part of it and letting people skip that seems to run counter toward the whole concept of the game. On the other hand, it's an MMO, and getting more players is the name of the game. Story gating definitely hurts that. Though I think it's 2.1-2.55 that's the real problem, since it's a timesink where you're theoretically not even supposed to gain levels. I'm not sure the 3.1+ plot has the same problem.

In the end, I think the fastest way to 60 is always going to be the story anyway (remember you don't have the armoury bonus on your first character), so I think as long as they don't gate non-endgame content, like new jobs, behind the story, things will work out.
