To progress the story you kind of need to progress the story.

Idg the lazy man complaints. If you want to play the game play it rather than cry about it.

"It's alright not to play it everyday."
it being alright doesn't mean the game is built around it. it also doesn't mean he wants everyone to unsub so that all the servers are dead for 2 months every 3 month cycle. the weekly lockouts is proof that the game is not ENTIRELY built on people just doing the story. you can't even complete a tome weapon without playing for 7 weeks.

Yoship accepting that those players exist doesn't mean he wants everyone to be like that. that's your projection.

I did not say story matters more then content as MSQ is be all end all get out of here with sticking words in my mouth. I said 1.0 did not fail cause it was too much like XI and for a FF game on top of the content the story is also a big part of the game. They want to press esc and skip the cut scenes fine I don't care ahead go but you should still have to go through it. Which I believe is the main point of these thread. People are against a skip all button not you pressing the esc button to skip the CS.

Is it not intended? Why should you care? Or for that matter why should THEY care? The companies literally couldn't give two effs about it: all they want is to find ways for us to spend money and I'm paying them for the service.
Infact it's why skins, costumes and all that stuff is famous in F2P: it sells, it's a nice cosmetic thing that takes the attention, and it's not overly cheap. Guess what's FFXIV is doing right now? Yup, exactly!

    2) Not sure what I wrote back, but so what? Other "Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game" don't get you stuck on a story. Even Single Player Role Playing Game allow you a much more array of freedom, and they are focused on story for the most part: I'm currently playing Legend of Heroes and the amount of things you can do with your free time is immense, and it's also rewarding (literally speaking).
Heck Skyrim is story driven too but did you really even bother to follow it? And that's a "Role Playing Game" too, mind you. A western one yes, but still one regardless

2.5) And that's still makes my point: 1.0 was a terrible mmorpg by gameplay AND technical standards, making it "unplayable" even if it had a heavy focus on story, just like FFXIV do. 2.0 fixed the gameplay and it instantly became a hit. As i said, my point pretty much stands: gameplay is mandatory to make a GAME - yes even a role playing GAME - playable to begin with. A story does nothing else but add flavour to the gameplay.

    3) I don't know, almost any mmorpg I know does it fine without a story, and some of those who do have a story still don't lock you from an entire expansion. The Role Playing part still exists: you still play the ROLE of an avatar and your ROLE as X is to explore the world and talk to other ROLEPLAYERS and play the game together. As I said earlier, the story is just added flavour to the game: it's there to make the experience enjoyable, not a chore.

So no, there's no balance because you're forced to complete the STORY which locks the GAMEPLAY behind it.
Meanwhile another game with heavy story on it (SWTOR) just suggests you to complete the STORY but doesn't lock the GAMEPLAY behind it.

But don't take me for a hater of stories: I love RPGs of all kind (FF a bit less, especially after 12 and 13) and a MMORPG with a campaign is fun to do and it's one of the main things I absolutely adored of Legion, while I simply could not bear to follow this one at all.
Regardless, Legion gave me full freedom of what I wanted to do without locking everything (And I can't even call World Quests a real lock, since that you pretty much unlock it by levelling) and I could follow the stories and the class campaign in any order I wanted. I just had to choose.

Something that this game sorely lacks: choices. And darn it, now I have imagines of myself playing the role of the villain...why can't we play them

Uh-huh. So far, each and every unofficial data sample would go against that claim - those show a small, but continuous decline.

    Official numbers, naturally, are unavailable.

League of Legends was released late 2009. From 2011 (cataclysm) onward, WoW bled 2 million subs each expansion.

Incidentally, that's also when League of Legends gained massive traction.

Coincidence? Or did people simply leave WoW for an even more accessible game?

I don't think it'd be that profitable to keep server up with 3 players on it.

I didn't know League of Legends was an MMORPG where you run around and do quests and stuff.
Alot of people that play LoL and similar games do so because they aren't as time consuming. You enter a game and soon after it's over and you can either start a new one or just leave it there for the day.

    Hell no.

I Agree that a sumarized version of the story should be available in quests for players who do not want to tackle all the ARR/HW content when a new expansion has just been released.
But letting people start at lvl 60? No thanks, having players who don't know absolutely anything about the game walking around at lvl 60 with 3 hotbars full of skills is not good idea.

In the end, the type of player that won'y play FFXIV because of it's MSQ requirement is not the type of player who is wanted in the community - And that's not a bad thing. Commiting to a niche (albeit a reasonably large one) brings more success than trying to make everyone happy.

This SAME discussion ocurred regarding HSW - The game stick to the gating and players keep flocking in. Maybe not the trigger-happy happy-go-killing WoW crowd, but well... who needs them?
Excuse me? Don't you think to even speak on behalf of an entire community. Not only has there mere presence of people breaking down whatever argument you struggle to maintain already go against you thinking to speak for them, unless of course that means you don't consider anyone not agreeing with you a part of the community, but even I'll say I don't agree with you. I couldn't care if another player cares for the MSQ or not, much through HW I couldn't give a rat's ass about the story. If they had the option to magically clear their entire MSQ Journal and open up the game completely for them, how could anyone have a problem with that? Because this game is supposed to be story-driven? Pretty sure I can log in to the game and beat the shit out of mobs for tomes whether or not I knew about the Dragonsong War or the Ala Mhigo resistance. Story is fulfilling to some, and irrelevant to others. Even now, you have people who paid no attention to the story and skipped everything. What would you do with them? Kick them out of the game because they didn't care? Story only lasts so long. You get your quests, you get your cutscenes and then for 2-4 months there's nothing else.

Also, great little slight against the playerbase for WoW. Cause clearly anyone who ever played WoW is trash, yeah? Is this another issue of someone not seeing something the way you do?
