can you use it to raise a main stat on a piece of NQ crafted gear? It's niche but it's another use.

Depends on the materia and what you may want to do. Crafting and gathering can be hit by mixing some low level materia in so if they're cheap, they're cost effective for the last overmelds. I've also tossed some III's into battle gear when overmelding when I get tired of blowing up IV's. III's can be fairly cheap thanks for airships. On another note, given the availability of grade IV materia through beast tribes now, and grade V through Mhachi matter/demimatter and PotD, is there any reason to hold on to grade I - III materia? We've already had the stat mod step on the anima questline so no chance of the Zodiac scroll melding mess.

Because for something to be called good there has to be options that aren't as good.
Yes.

If you use normal quality crafted gear you can use main stat materia to make it almost-as-good as high quality. That's the only legit use for it unless you are a tank.

This is true, but as someone else mentioned, getting VIT accessories, and adding primary stats to them. This used to be very common for healers in PvP back in 2.1, idk about now, as i dont PvP, but maybe this still applies, as having enough HP to live through some stuff really helps, but then again, it might be better to heal more.

Also, the lower the grade of the materia is, the better chances it has for overmelding. At least in craft and gather gear most of them are possible to max meld with using lesser grade materias on the last spots. When materia I a) costs about tenth of IV, and b) has better chance to stick, not to mention it still fills the stat, sure I rather go with the lower grade.Depends on the materia and what you may want to do. If you say 'pls' because it's shorter than 'please', I say 'no' because it's shorter than 'yes'.
