Aye; we do currently know for a fact that it is, indeed, a bowharp and Archer, indeed, will supplement its ranged attack by evolving the ability to ranged support in its downtime.
Now everyone's just arguing over whether or not they think it's a good thing because, let's face it, there's a reason MMO design requires more than experience with MMO play.
I know, I know. In the stories Square Enix have told you thus far, they've been pretty unique entities. However, unfortunately, if you ask around, (1) ranged DPS and pure support classes really have their drawbacks in the modern MMO market, (2) any class that can't really hold its own solo is no fun to play in XIV, and (3) the concept of a battle minstrel (who obviously attacks form a range because if they were okay with being all up in the enemy's grill, they wouldn't be a fucking MINSTREL.) isn't uncommon to high fantasy as a whole.BUT THE JOBS ARE TOTALLY DIFFERENT AND HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH ONE ANOTHER
Anyway, I digress.
Yes. It's a harp. I'm sure SE will tie the Bard job securely to Archer's abilities and style, and by the time this game is over you won't think anything more of an XIV bard having a bow than you thought of an XI bard having a dagger or monks fighting with giant armored demons with an ancient mixture of turtle devastation waves and tae bo.
