so do your followers go into a dungeon with you or do they just disappear for 18 hours and then materialize back with "loot"?

everything come to those who wait

I think we're jumping the gun a bit. Squadrons haven't even been fully implemented. We're basically preparing our squadrons now for whatever it is they're going to be doing when the meat of the mechanic gets implemented.
This isn't to say SE can't still fuck it up and give us something lackluster, but damn, at least let them actually do that before we all start crying over spilled milk.

Well that's the annoying part. How about they add stuff that's already REALLY good, instead of promising us it gets better...
I agree with Riardon there, I said the same thing.
It's just tiring...after getting disappointment after disappointment it's like 'forget waiting' at this point.
Make it fun the first time or at least add more meat to the bone before you hand it to us.

Good is subjective. You may not like it or it might not be something you're happy with at the moment but that isn't the case for everyone judging from my experience with people in my FC. Personally I've been busy clearing content with my main and alts to focus too much on challenge log or on Tales for that matter. I'll give a more personal opinion later when I've had more time to try these. First impression for me at least is a positive one.
I just have issues with people who like to use *we* when giving their opinion. If you aren't happy with it fine, you're certainly entitled to your view.

Thinking about it, and building on this idea slightly, this could've been the way to promote the use of old content. Instead of Tails, we joined DF with one of our chosen squad, levelling them in levelling dungeons along the way.Just imagine that instead of generic bland 'missions' we could send them in real dungeons of appropriate level and they could bring back it's loot for alts or glamour. And at lv.50/60 we could send them to at least ARR primals/raids, or to HW primals with less success rate so they could bring their glamour once per day.
In this case they at least could be remotely useful, but right now they are worse than retainers who could bring various items from ventures (including random dungeon drops) with much less effort.

Primal strength varies. I think it'd be possible to send them out to take on a weaker form of, say, Ifrit without much of a risk. It's not like primals have only ever been dealt with by those with the power of the Echo before.

Their ability to forcibly enthrall people is why this is a problem. Until there is another way around this, eorzean methods of fighting of the summons (i:e:tank and spank)remains a risky endeavor compared to say, shooting it to death from a safe distance or using mechanised units.

I may be wrong but I think they have to hit you with their special enthralling magic or whatever (e.g. Ifrit's blue fire breath thing) in order for you to be converted. If you can dodge it or prevent it, people without the Echo should be fine.Their ability to forcibly enthrall people is why this is a problem. Not every primal is big on enthrallment either, which explains why you don't come across tempered subjects for each one.
